Can't kill it

Recommended Posts

My mother infected her computer (again..) but this one is driving me insane.. I've independantly run Malwarebytes, ad-aware, superantispyware, and AVG and I still can't kill it. They hit on three trojan backdoors, which got rid of the fake Windows Defender messages and hard disk error popups. I restored her desktop and un-hid every file on the computer and thought I was good. Not quite.. It's still got something that I can't find.. CPU usage is maxed but there's nothing running in task manager (explore.exe is showing the usage) it's also hitting the internet becasue I'm seeing network traffic, but I'm not using it. When I do open IE or Firefox it's redirecting clicked links through a paid search engine and spitting out more spam sites instead of where I want to go.

At this point, I gave up, I was going to dump the whole thing and run a restore on it. It's an HP Mini which doesn't have regular system restore. It comes with Roxio BackonTrack. I have the backup file on a flash drive. (only has a 16gig harddrive) It won't connect.. It's telling me it isn't formatted (it is, I've checked) I thought I'd be tricky, loaded it onto my network drive. it reads it there but Roxio tells me then it can't detect drive C.

I'm at a loss..

also, the how to on this forum asks to run dds . It won't.. freezes the computer. Below is a log from Hijackthis

any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Joe

DDS will not complete. I've downloaded and attempted both versions of the file regularly and in safe mode. the both are causing the computer to completely lock up and I need to pull the battery in order to get it to do anything. (I let it sit for a half hour in hopes that it would get somewhere)

RogueKiller report in safe mode below, When I tried to run in regular mode it told me it wasn't a valid win32 application.

Thank you again.

Please read the directions carefully so you don't end up deleting something that is good!!

Please note that TDSSKiller can be run in safe mode if needed.

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
    image000q.png
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
    2012081514h0118.png
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
    clip.jpg
  • Click the Start Scan button.
    19695967.jpg
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
    67776163.jpg
    Any entries like this: \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - please choose Skip.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
    Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    62117367.jpg
    Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here. There may be 3 logs > so post or attach all of them.
  • Sometimes these logs can be very large, in that case please attach it or zip it up and attach it.

Here's a summary of what to do if you would like to print it out:

If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue

If you get the warning about a file UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic or LockedFile.Multi.Generic please choose

Skip and click on Continue

Any entries like this: \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - please choose Skip.

If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results and offer three (3) options.

Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue => Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.

Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.

Reports are attached, one malware that I selected cure, and the rest skip.

as a side note, loading the forum right before downloading the new file caused a pretty creative FBI warning (computer is locked for downloading copyrighted material and if I have a webcam it's taken photos, with instructions to go to Walmart and buy a moneypak)

also, the auto restart caused the computer to lose wireless. I'm sure it's a simple fix, but I had to rummage for a network cable..

Thank you greatly.

Run TDSSKiller again and choose Delete for this one only: (no need to check the Loaded Modules" box or post the log)

17:56:27.0828 3740 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - skipped by user

17:56:27.0828 3740 \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - User select action: Skip

as a side note, loading the forum right before downloading the new file caused a pretty creative FBI warning (computer is locked for downloading copyrighted material and if I have a webcam it's taken photos, with instructions to go to Walmart and buy a moneypak)

That sounds like a separate virus infection

also, the auto restart caused the computer to lose wireless. I'm sure it's a simple fix, but I had to rummage for a network cable..

OK, I'm not sure what caused that....lets see how it is once you're clean.

Reboot and run another scan with RogueKiller and post the new log. MrC

no longer appears on the list. thinking about it I may have run the original in safe mode which I'll try now. The only thing I've done to the computer since then is reset tcp/ip which restored wireless.

Looks Good.................

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

---------->NOTE<----------

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

Using ComboFix......

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

4. If ComboFix wants to update.....please allow it to.

File::

c:\windows\sncvryba.exe

Folder::

c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\rimtfzpougbemza

Registry::

ClearJavaCache::

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

CFScript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix while it is running. It may cause it to stall.

After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot)......

Please provide the contents of the ComboFix log (C:\ComboFix.txt) in your next reply.

Please delete this file:

c:\windows\sncvryba.exe

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Download aswMBR to your desktop.
http://public.avast....erek/aswMBR.exe
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "NO".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.
NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.
Please zip it up and attach it to your next post.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please Update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, post the report.

Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

Yes we killer it.

Lets check your computers security before you go and we have a little cleanup to do also:

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

It should just pop-up when the program is done running.

Try it in safe mode.

If that doesn't work, install this program to determine which programs are out of date.

(Out dated programs on the system are vulnerable to malware)

Secunia was fun, caused the computer to freeze because it was trying to update everything at once (it's just a netbook only a gig of ram) I uninstalled and have been working on manually updating the programs it listed. (Adobe Reader - mentioned above - was up to date according to the program when that was program run, I uninstalled and will fix later) Somehow my mother figured out how to turn off windows update, 60 updates not installed, it's running now and they're slowly all failing..

Java™ 6 Update 11 <----uninstall from add/remove programs

Java version out of Date! <-------Download and install the latest version from Here

Adobe Flash Player 11.5.502.110

Adobe Reader 9 Adobe Reader out of Date! <---please check for an update

You have out dated programs on the system which are vulnerable to malware.

Please update or uninstall them

Info on doing that can be found in my Preventive Maintenance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A little clean up to do....
Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)
Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"
Copy and paste next command in the field:
ComboFix /uninstall
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
cf2.jpg
Then hit enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point
(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall)
---------------------------------
Please download OTL from one of the links below: (you may already have OTL on the system)
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.com
http://www.itxassoci...T-Tools/OTL.exe
Save it to your desktop.
Run OTL and hit the CleanUp button. (This will cleanup the tools and logs used including itself)
Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.
IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST, etc....
-------------------------------
Any questions...please post back.
If you think I've helped you, please leave a comment > click on my avatar picture > click Profile Feed.
Take a look at My Preventive Maintenance to avoid being infected again.
Good Luck and Thanks for using the forum, MrC
I had to come to work again (yay snowstorm!) Left it installing the last few windows updates. I goofed on the combofix uninstall and it ran it instead. It gave me the same message about rootkit.zeroaccess. Is this normal? Should I just run a disaster recovery with Roxio now that I can?
Thank you again for all your help, I cant tell you how much easier it has made this!
