PUM Hijack and others

Recommended Posts

My laptop has been infected with PUM.hijack.startmenu and some others. I got a message that I had critical HDD errors and needed to update some software I'd never heard of, and files started disappearing. I restarted the computer and got the same messages/problems.

I shut down the computer and removed the harddrive, then connected it to an old laptop to take a look. I found files were hidden, not gone, so did a virus scan using avast, removed 6 instances of PUM.hijack.startmenu, and saved backup copies of the files I had to have off that computer. I manually unchecked "hide files" for most of the files, and returned the harddrive to the original computer.

WIth partial function restored, I was able to download and install Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes found more PUM.hijack, so those were removed. At this point some of the files were still hidden (or hidden again) and I began to have problems with a popup saying that I was not logged in to Windows Messaging. (I've never used to Windows Messaging.) i installed avast! and did a boot scan, which found:

File MBR is infected by MBR:SST [Rtk]

File C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\Local settings\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\59\47363e7b-139621d4|>I\I.class in infected by Java:Malware-gen [Trj]

These were removed, and Malwarebytes run again but found nothing. At this point (I think) I ran Unhide to reveal the hidden files.

I seemed to have full function of most of my software, but began getting popups from avast! every minute or so saying that it was blocking:

http://ryandlawmed.c...vyGpjxR8wLsTrb. . . .

http://www.mydicaonlyc.com/ac7.php?aid (network shield)

so I shut the computer down.

Recognizing I was in over my head, I used another computer to log and found this forum. Per instructions, the .txt files from DSS are below, and I'll wait for further instructions. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

Please remove any usb or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!

Please download and run RogueKiller to your desktop.

Quit all running programs.

For Windows XP, double-click to start.

For Vista or Windows 7, do a right-click on the program, select Run as Administrator to start, & when prompted Allow to run.

Click Scan to scan the system.

When the scan completes > Close out the program > Don't Fix anything!

Don't run any other options, they're not all bad!!!!!!!

Post back the report which should be located on your desktop.

  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
    67776163.jpg
Any entries like this: \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - please choose Skip.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    62117367.jpg
Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here. There may be 3 logs > so post or attach all of them.
  • Sometimes these logs can be very large, in that case please attach it or zip it up and attach it.

Here's a summary of what to do if you would like to print it out:

If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue

If you get the warning about a file UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic or LockedFile.Multi.Generic please choose

Skip and click on Continue

Any entries like this: \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System ) - please choose Skip.

MrCharlie-

I ran RogueKiller and deleted the files; did you need to see the logs?

After making sure I could see hidden files, I found and deleted C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\3uWqkoJFrRgeLe.exe. There

Two files with similar names were found in the same folder (-3uWqkoJFrRgeLe and -3uWqkoJFrRgeLer). Does any action need to be taken with them?

I downloaded TDSSKiller, but was unable to open it. I then tried moving it to the laptop on a USB stick, but was unable to open it.

Thanks!

Files were deleted as instructed.

I downloaded the attached TDSSKiller, and it opened OK. The listings under "Objects to scan" and "Additional options" are different.

Under "Objects to scan" the choices are: System memory (pre-checked), Services and drivers (pre-checked), Boot sectors (pre-checked), and Loaded modules. Do I make any changes here?

Under "Additional options" the choices are Verify file digital signatures and Detect TDLFS file system. Do I check "Verify file digital signatures?"

Thanks!

Loos Good...........

Please download and run ComboFix.

The most important things to remember when running it is to disable all your malware programs and run Combofix from your desktop.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Information on disabling your malware programs can be found Here.

Make sure you run ComboFix from your desktop.

Give it at least 30-45 minutes to finish if needed.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

---------->NOTE<----------

If you get the message Illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion after you run ComboFix....please reboot the computer, this should resolve the problem. You may have to do this several times if needed.

When I connect to the 'net, I'm still getting what looks like a notice from Windows (formatted like a note from Internet Explorer) saying "Webpage unavailable offline. The Web page you requested is not available offline. To view this page, click Connect" with the usual "Connect" and "Stay Offline" buttons. I'm not sure what this is, or if it is due to all the anti-malware software installed recently.

Other than that, things seem almost back to normal. Files of all types seem to open and function as expected. Subjectively, files open and operate at the speed I've come to consider "normal" for this computer.

MBAM quick scan found no malicious items, results below:

OK, lets clean it up....reboot and see how it is > MrC

A little clean up to do....

Please Uninstall ComboFix: (if you used it)

Press the Windows logo key + R to bring up the "run box"

Copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /uninstall

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

cf2.jpg

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and clears System Restore cache and create new Restore point

(If that doesn't work.....you can simply rename ComboFix.exe to Uninstall.exe and double click it to complete the uninstall)

---------------------------------

Please download OTL from one of the links below: (you may already have OTL on the system)

http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe

http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.com

http://www.itxassoci...T-Tools/OTL.exe

Save it to your desktop.

Run OTL and hit the CleanUp button. (This will cleanup the tools and logs used including itself)

Any other programs or logs you can manually delete.

IE: RogueKiller.exe, RKreport.txt, RK_Quarantine folder, C:\FRST, etc....
