Spyware.password

Recommended Posts

A full scan yesterday detected a spyware.password infection.

I quarantined the items, but i see that this can be a stubborn infection, so I wanted to make sure I was all clean. The only symptoms I had was in Secunia scans, it kept telling me my Adobe Flash Player was out of date, but then when I would download the file they suggested, it would say I had the latest version. I've always know Secunia to be accurate, but this FP "issue" has been going on for a few weeks.

Does it look like MAMB got it all?

Let's have you de-install the Flash Player & get the latest.

To de-install Flash Player

Use Programs and Features (Windows 7 & Vista) or Add-or-Remove Programs (Windows XP) to de-install older versions of Flash Player.

For stubborn cases,

Download and save the Flash Player uninstaller >> uninstall Flash Player for 32-bit Windows<<

If you have Windows 64-bit, use this Flash Player uninstaller >> uninstall Flash Player for 64-bit Windows<<

Close all browsers and instant messenger (IM) programs.

Run the uninstaller.

To get latest Flash Player

Go to http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash

and get the latest Flash Player

Un-Check any checkbox for Google Chrome, or McAfee Security Scan Plus, or any other widget or toolbar or add-on!!!

Reference: How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system

NEXT:

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NEXT:

Save and close any work documents, close any apps that you started.

Start your MBAM MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware.

Click the Settings Tab and then the General Settings sub-tab. Make sure all option lines have a checkmark.

Then click the Scanner settings sub-tab in second row of tabs. Make sure all option lines have a checkmark.

Next, Click the Update tab. Press the "Check for Updates" button.

If prompted for a Restart, do that.

When done, click the Scanner tab.

Do a Quick Scan.

When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.

The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy & Paste the latest MBAM scan log

NEXT:

Download >> Farbar's Service Scanner utility << and Save to your Desktop.

If using Windows 7 or Vista, Right-Click on fss.exe and select Run As Admisnitrator.

If using XP, double-click to start.

Answer Yes to ok when prompted.

If your firewall then puts out a prompt, again, allow it to run.

Once FSS is on-screen, be sure the following items are checkmarked:

  • Internet Services
  • Windows Firewall
  • System Restore
  • Security Center/Action Center
  • Windows Update
  • Windows Defender

Click on "Scan".

It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.

Copy & Paste contents of FSS.txt into your reply.

The MBAM scan & the FSS reports are good.

I'd like for you to make a new run of DDS so you could copy/paste the new DDS.txt + Attach.txt for a new review by me.

You are highly encouraged to turn ON User Account Control for Windows 7. It affords some security protection for the system.

See http://windows.micro...ntrol-on-or-off

You do not need to have it at the highest level. One or two levels below the top is good. Just do not go without it.

Go to Control Panel >> Action Center

Click on down arror for Security.

What does it show for Windows Update ?

antivirus ?

firewall ?

Since you have Norton 360, I would expect that the Norton firewall is on, and that it also takes care of the antivirus.

Kindly also provide your summary of where things stand as far as your initial issue.

Ok, NC !!

The MBAm results were good. The FSS report, good too.

You are good to go after a small cleanup. I would suggest you do a full system scan with your updated Norton360.

  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • Click Yes to beginning the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. Choose Yes.

ERUNT you should keep and use periodically to backup Windows registry.

Delete the following if still present:

FSS.exe

SecurityCheck.exe

Safer practices & malware prevention

We are finished here. Best regards. cool.gif

You may be seeing the blocking of ads by MVP Hosts file, which is a good thing.

If your real typical websites are being blocked, let me know which they are.

But overall, the MVP Hosts is a very good layer of protection. I have had it for many years.

Should you decide to do without, use this reference to undo

How can I reset the Hosts file back to the default?
