Combo-Fix found "Root-Kit" malware bypassed by Malwarebytes

Recommended Posts

I wanted to let you know that Microsoft's Security Essentials, SUPER-Antispyware, and Malwarebytes, all bypassed a problem in my registry that goes by the name of "Root-Kit" as described by Combo-Fix. Also described as a "particularly difficult to remove" (Trojan, I believe). This was the best description I got at the time for what this beast is called. I think there are many names. It was supposedly successfully cleaned from my system, but I have had numerous other software problems even after its removal (i.e. the little icon file "Trash Can" would not allow itself to empty, and my "Search Window" function would not manually turn "On" ).

B.T.W., the MS "Security Essentials" S.W. (online protection) was running 100% of the time when this infection occurred. Both SUPER Antispyware and Malwarebytes each, found different things to "remove" and "fix" in my system. I finally resorted to running "Combo-Fix" as a last ditch effort to regain some semblance of control for my XP Pro Service Pack III OS.

My system is still not working the way it once did. I am working my way though all the applicable Microsoft Fix-It Center automated helps, but running out of "help" options there. I may have to resort to AOL's "Fix-it for me" solution center, or run Piriform's CC Reg-edit program.

Or, I might have to simply get down on my hands and knees and pray for a miraculous "healing" on my system.

Last night I ran the MS Safety Scan (complete, full-scan mode, over 1,2 million files, @ 7 plus hours total scan time to finish) no virus or other spyware crud was found, but my system is still not "back to normal" (it takes too long for browsers to load). However, my audio output is back to normal now (it was pulsing in and out, volume wise, and my "mouse movements" affected the sounds quality drastically).

Moving the mouse rapidly also had the effect of driving the CPU memory to 100% utilization. This is no longer the case.

I just wanted to let you know about one "end users" experience.

Don't get me wrong, I like Malwarebytes a lot, it works, just not on this particular variant that I picked up I guess.

Sincerely,

mrc109
