RunDLL error on PC startup. Problem starting cleanup.dll

Recommended Posts

A few weeks ago I ran Malwarebytes and it detected an infection that required a reboot. This is a work computer that's logged into a domain and take some time to restart, so I was going to wait till lunch or I left for the day. I don't remember much after that, but I shutdown/restart my computer every day, so I eventually did.

On startup, I now get this RunDLL error message: "There was a problem starting C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Cleanup.dll. The specified module could not be found."

I assume this was the module it schedule to run in order to clean the infection. I checked the location listed, and the file is obviously not there. I ran another scan and the infection was gone. At this point I let it go for a few days and the error still persisted. I next uninstalled Malwarebytes using RevoUninstaller, cleaning up any leftover files and registry entries. Restarted and still got the message. Reinstalled Malware bytes, restarted, still the error.

I've checked regedit the current user/machine's run and run once keys, msconfig's startup, startmenu start-up, lol...everywhere I at least knew to look and can't find anything related to this.

I just decide to look back in the Malwarebytes folder one last time and I did notice a DWORD "startwithwindows" that's set to 1. Normally I'd assume this means start the program with windows, but in this case it might be referencing the DLL file in question.

Anyway, thanks in advace for any help! It's obviously not a serious issue, but I'm sure I hate annoying error messages as much as everyone else! :)

Hello and welcome, agroom: :)

Sorry to hear might be infected & are having issues running MBAM after cleaning a recent infection.

We don't actually work on malware related issues in this particular sub-forum.

Since this is a work computer, your corporate license for MBAM entitles you to one-on-one direct support from the corporate support team. :)

They will help you to clean any remaining malware remnants and get MBAM back up and running.

Please contact corporate support >>HERE<<.

Please make sure you have malwarebytes.org and salesforce.com in your Safe Sender list in your email program.

In order to assist you better, please provide the corporate support folks with the following information when contacting them:

Hi:

Well, unfortunately, it's a violation of the EULA to be running MBAM in a corporate environment without proper licensing.

How can I legally use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in my Business or Corporate Entity (including Government, Education, & Non-Profit)?

Moreover, this forum (and the associated malware removal sub-forum) are targeted primarily to home users.

The dedicated corporate support folks work with corporate customers offline from here via the corporate helpdesk.

Second, if the infected computer is on a domain, then -- depending on the nature of the infection -- it's entirely possible that other computer may also be infected. So, it would be doing you a disservice to clean the one rig, if others are infected.

Thanks for your patience and understanding,

daledoc1
