Google Chrome extremely slow | suspect malware

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am experiencing an extreme slowdown with Google Chrome, which I believe followed a browser infection of some kind - I scanned the computer with malwarebytes, HijackThis, and Spybot, which removed several suspect components, but have not improved the operation of the browser. I understand that this might not be malware related... but I have tried several other methods of improving the browser speed (memory (virtual) increases, tuning Chrome settings, turning off services and other processes, disabling plugins etc.)

I do have one plugin running though, adblocker, because it was the only way I could stop the original browser issue (a website listed as a248.e.akamai.net) from spamming my google page, it works.

I would like to attach the HijackThis log file I have generated, but cannot - can anyone tell me how to do this?

I would like to know if anyone can find any malicious looking elements in the list?

Thanks.

Hello orionanomaly and :welcome:! My name is Maniac and I will be glad to help you solve your malware problem.

Please note:

  • If you are a paying customer, you have the privilege to contact the help desk at Consumer Support. If you choose this option to get help, please let me know.
  • I recommend you to keep the instructions I will be giving you so that they are available to you at any time. You can save them in a text file or print them.
  • Make sure you read all of the instructions and fixes thoroughly before continuing with them.
  • Follow my instructions strictly and don’t hesitate to stop and ask me if you have any questions.
  • Post your log files, don't attach them. Every log file should be copy/pasted in your next reply.

Step 1

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Go to Update tab and select Check for Updates. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Go to Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 2

Download OTL to your Desktop

  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Please tick the Scan All users. Next, click the Quick Scan button. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and post them in your topic.

In your next reply, post the following log files:

  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  • OTL log with Extras.txt

As it turns out, I believe this issue is related to settings on my browser, as I have been able to reduce the slow speed of the browser by modifying several parameters. As such, no longer believe it was being caused by malware, and I will no longer need such assistance.

Thank you very much for your time, and I apologize that I hadn't realized this sooner.

Thanks!
