Possible Infection of Malwarebytes Program

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have an odd thing happening when I run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program on my Lenovo laptop. As the program scans through my directory, it hits points in the registry that show like this on the scan window:

C\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\net8185.inf_amd64_neutral_4ab014d645098f5\net8185.PNF

My question is about all these hash marks. I have never noticed them before now, and I cannot imagine that there are files that look like this in my registry. Could this be the work of a virus in my computer that is trying to confound the Malwarebytes program, or is this normal?

Thanks in advance for your attention...

Actually it's quite normal. If you have your setting set to show hidden and system files and you browse to this location using My Computer or Windows Explorer you'll notice there are tons of folders and files there.

C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository

The folder paths are too long to display so what they've done in the program is basically show you the starting position of the scan and then the end of the path/file name and condensed the middle down to just folder marks in order to be able to display what is being scanned.

So, nothing really wrong there with what you're seeing.

If there is something found or another issue though please let us know.

Thanks
