HP Scanjet 5550c - Can't scan

I have been using this scanner by opening PaperPort to scan documents in OCR text and with the Windows Fax and Scan. All of a suddent I can no longer scan using PaperPort - I get the error "Problem Communicating with the Twain Device".

When I try to scan using Windows Fax and Scan - When I click on New Scan - I get the error "Could Not Complete Scan".

I hate that I'm unable to use the complete suite of software like I under when I was running a Windows XP PC.

I also tried to run Windows Update as there was an update for the software for the scanner - but I get the error "code 80070103".

So for now, I'm dead in the water with regards to any type of scanning. Any assistance you could offer would be greatly appreciated. BTW I'm running Windows 7, SP 1.

HP Scanjets - Products not supported in Windows 7

The following products are not supported and do not have any driver options available in the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system:

HP Scanjet 5500c and 5550c Scanner series

What can I do

HP drivers and software created for the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system might provide a scan workaround in Microsoft Windows 7 for some products but are not guaranteed.

Consider an upgrade to a newer HP product that will work with Microsoft's new Windows 7 operating system.

I understand what you are saying, but I don't understanding how something could work fine since January 2011(with some work arounds, i.e. using Windows Fax & Scan to scan pictures and PaperPort to scan docs that I needed to convert to text for editing) and then all of a sudden stop working.

I always thought that if it wasn't going to work - then it wouldn't work from day one and that't not the case in my situation.

Thats hard to tell why it quit working all of a sudden, it could have been a windows update that changed something on the way windows works. We have no way of knowing how it was installed and made to work before.

Click the Run button if prompted with an Open File - Security Warning dialog box.

A black DOS console should open and run for a moment.

Hi Jennifer,

I don't see any specific known infection but there are some signs in the Event Logs that could simply be hardware/software/driver conflicts or it could be a possible sign of an infection.

Before we go too far I think you should have someone assist you in scanning your system further for a possible infection and if everything turns out clean then we can go from there trying to see if we can fix it. Basically you have a few services that are crashing for some reason.

Here are the steps needed to get your computer scanned for malware and if needed also cleaned....

Please read the following so that you can begin the cleaning process:

Don't use any temporary file cleaners unless requested - this can cause data loss and make recovery difficult
