Infected with Win32.Zafi.B

Hello,

I have seemingly picked up an infection of Win32.Zafi.B. It first showed up as a flase warning "Windows Security Alert" - "Windows Firewall has blocked....". It also blocked or re-directed certain web sites including Hotmail. My son first came across this and clicked on the "Protect" button on the "Windows Security Alert" pop-up. This may have made matters worse..?

I have run full virus scans that have detected other items and have removed them as found. (Virus scanning is always enabled so this surprised me.)

I have run MBAM several times without it detecting anything amiss - even though the "Windows Security Alert" continues to pop up. I have done both quick and full scans using MBAM with the same result - no problems identified.

Thank you for your reply. Prior to seeing your post I tried Mbam again with the newer definitions build version 1773 and it detected and removed three files - previous builds didn't detect them. Since doing this the problem appears to have been fixed.

Can I regard the problem as being solved or should I run Combofix as you suggested?

Well if MBAM is all clear now and the signs of infection are gone that's a good sign.

You should run an up to date Anti-Virus scan of the FULL SYSTEM and check for any Microsoft updates.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore

• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
• Click Properties.
  
  
• Click the System Restore tab.
  
  
• Check Turn off System Restore.
  
  
• Click Apply, and then click OK.
  
  
• Reboot.
  
  

Turn ON System Restore

• On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
• Click Properties.

• UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  
  
• Click Apply, and then click OK.
  
  

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
