Windows 8 Release Preview Exclusion

Recommended Posts

On the pinned FAQ it shows for MSE the exclusion to be put in Malwarebyte to be >>>>In the small browse window that opens, navigate to C:\Program Files and click once on Microsoft Security Client and click OK. I have Malwarebyte Pro and want to try it out on Windows 8 Release Preview which comes with Windows Defender, they have changed MSE and called it Defender, so that file is not there. I went ahead and set things up and used C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe in the Malwarebyte exclusions under the Ignore List, is this the right file to use if not please tell me the right file?

Hi, Firefox:

Actually, I think the OP is correct. :)

The "new" WD in Win8 has been upgraded and rebranded with at least SOME anti-virus capability akin to MSE.

Having said that, I'm not sure how robust it will be, or how to set the MBAM mutual exclusions/permissions.

It's all still a bit confusing, to be sure.

I guess we'll have to wait for an MBAM guru for the skinny on that. ;)

Cheers!

The software included with Windows 8 as I understand it is MSE, just renamed. So excluding it from Malwarebytes Anti-Malware should be no different, just substitute the folder name where the software installs its files for the Microsoft Security Client folder in the following instructions:

Set Exclusions for Microsoft Security Essentials 2.x in Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and click on the Ignore List tab
  • Click the Add button on the lower left
  • In the small browse window that opens, navigate to C:\Program Files and click once on Microsoft Security Client and click OK
  • Close Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Also be aware that currently exclusions aren't actually required between Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Microsoft Security Essentials. The two run just fine together in realtime without setting exclusions so doing so is entirely optional.

exile360, from what you wrote I take it that I should exclude the folder >>>> C:\Program Files\Windows Defender <<<<. Instead of going one more level down and getting the MSASCui file, also will it do the entire folder instead of just a file? I do understand I do not have to do this but would like to so there is no chance of problems. Thanks to everyone replying to help out. Thanks sly, PS, it does seem to be working ok the way it was but want to be sure it is done right.

Yes, that's correct :).

When you exclude a folder from Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, every file and process contained in that folder will be excluded, so in this case, it will be all of the files used by Windows Defender.
