News letter sign-up scam?

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this is official Malwarebytes or not but as soon as I signed up for Malwarebytes newsletter, I got this e-mail at my @live.com and it was in my Junk. It said Malwarebytes Corporation so I was suspicious and hovered my mouse over it. It said it came from something like info@news-malwarebytes.org. So I thought it was legit. It said "Thanks for signing up for the newsletter, Please click here to confirm." I did and it took me to page05.net which is a known phishing site. I'm confused. I ran a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes and "Default scan" with Hitman Pro. Came out clean. Should I be worried? I deleted the e-mail. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Assassin,

That is our email provider, not a phishing site. It's a brand new email system that we are still tweaking and working on. Thanks for the input and sorry we freaked you out. We have some more work to do on it.

But you are safe, it is us!

Can you confirm this is exactly what you guys have sent me?

Sorry for making such a big deal, but the fact that the link didn't take me to your wesbsite is still ringing some bells. I'd really appreciate it if you, or one of the other admins/mods would reply confirming. Thanks again!

Hi Assassin

Not to worry, this is our newsletter email. A simple way you can check this is by looking at the domain of the email it came from. In this case, it would be "malwarebytes.org". Technically it's actually "news.malwarebytes.org", which is a subdomain, as indicated by the period before "malwarebytes.org".

If this email was not from the domain or subdomain of Malwarebytes, then you might have some cause for worry. For example (and I'm making this up here) "news_malwarebytes.org" is not a domain of Malwarebytes since there is no period, but can look official at a glance and end up tricking unsuspecting users.

When it doubt, it's never a bad idea to ask an official representative, which is exactly what you've done. Good thinking! :)

The WOT page you linked to is about:

pages05.net

You said the newsletter took you to:

page05.net

Those are different domains entirely..

Thank you very much Strenalis. Yes, I'm probably the most paranoid person you're ever going to meet! Thanks again for the kind words and example of what is official Malwarebytes and what isn't.

Hi, screen317. Sorry if I mistyped "pages05.net". Actually, there is no such thing as "page05.net". You see, I was in a hurry so I typed it quickly so that at least I'd get a reply by morning. Sorry if I confused you guys. Same thing with the "info@news-malwarebytes.org". Since I was in a hurry, I mistyped "info@news.malwarebytes.org". Thanks for the point out!
