Possibly Still infected or..?

Recommended Posts

I am trying to fix my sister's laptop which previously had I believe one or possibly 2 rootkits, some virus' and trojans (yeah she seems to have knack for ruining her computers). I was having a lot of trouble initially, found a topic on here which led me to using chameleon and that seemed to kick things off to get (what I believe) to be everything off. Initially any anti virus wouldn't install properly, and malwarebytes would try to run but would eventually not respond and couldn't complete the scan. It did, I ran it a few times, ran avg free a few times, and in the end uninstalled most and only have malwarebytes (pro) and commodo dragon.

The issue now is unlike my pc which runs both and has malwarebytes start up with the computer using the active protection, on the laptop it will not start up. I can manually load it, and scans fine finding nothing, but once I try to click the scheduler or the enable protection module button, i get an error which reads

"An error has occurred. Please report this issue to our support team (include the content of all error message(s) and code(s) in your submission)

PROGRAM_ERROR_PROTECTION_MODULE (1068, 0, ProtectionEnable)"

I double checked, that's the code exactly as it reads. If I click scheduler, it's the same code only with this below that same error message listed above "The dependency service or group failed to start".

Before the generic comments which I've been reading over and over on this forum as suggested, yes I tried to use the MBAMclean uninstaller and reinstalled using both the installer posted on the forums, and another time using the installer given to me when I bought the licenses for the protection module. I tried running it in safe mode, I've disabled commodo while installing/uninstalling, I still get no more error messages, but still am unable to have Malwarebytes run live in the background. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Hello and welcome, Big_Shifty:

Sounds as if you are still infected, especially if a clean reinstall of MBAM didn't work and if Chameleon didn't work, either.

Some of today's infections are REALLY nasty and hard to clean.

We cannot work on malware removal in this sub-section of the forum, so please read below for assistance with cleaning your system.

IMPORTANT: Please do NOT use any temporary file cleaners unless instructed to do so - they can cause data loss, making it hard to recover your system.

There are some excellent, self-help tutorials on getting MBAM to run on an infected system in the FAQ: HERE.

IF YOU PREFER EXPERT ASSISTANCE WITH MALWARE REMOVAL, PLEASE CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING 3 OPTIONS:

OPTION 1: Free, one-on-one, expert assistance in the Malware Removal Forum.

OPTION 2: For paid users of MBAM PRO, free, one-on-one, expert assistance from the MBAM support helpdesk.

OPTION 3: Fee-based, one-on-one, expert assistance from Premium Support.

OPTION 1:

  • Please print out, read and carefully follow the instructions in the "I'm Infected - What Do I Do Now?" article.
  • --->If the infection has so crippled the computer that you cannot complete some or all of the steps, then just do the best you can and start a new topic as described below.

  • Then please start a new post in the Malware Removal Forum.
  • When starting your new post, please note the following:
  • Please do NOT post in a topic started by someone else, even if their problem sounds similar.
  • Please COPY/PASTE the requested DDS logs directly into your post, rather than attaching them.
  • Under options, please be sure to select "track this topic" and "immediate email notification", so you'll know when a helper responds.

  • Please be patient - it may be 48 hours or more before a helper can assist you, especially when the forum is very busy.
  • Please do NOT "bump" your topic or reply back to it for at least 48 hours.
  • Doing so may cause your topic to be overlooked, as it will appear that you are already being helped.

OPTION 2:

If you are a paid user of MBAM PRO and would like support via the helpdesk, please contact them here.

OPTION 3:

If you prefer the Malwarebytes Premium Services (comprehensive solutions to all your computer support needs – from installation and set-up to troubleshooting and tune-ups), please go to the Premium Support site here.

Please be patient – someone will assist you as soon as possible.

Thank you very much,

PS Please use the "Reply to this Topic" or "More Reply Options" buttons (instead of the “Quote” and “MultiQuote” buttons) when replying here & at the other forums. That will make your topic easier to follow. :)
