Java is reported as missing, but it is there ?

Recommended Posts

Hi -

This may just be a small problem, but I am not sure how deep it is going -

I have Java 7 Update 5 listed as installed in Control Panel , ADD / REMOVE , but when I check it (Java) the program is not recognised as being installed at all on the computer.

I have attempted to remove all versions and then reinstall, but I cannot uninstall or reinstall the program in any way -

NOTE; I have not used REVO yet as there may be a problem with Java or the program may have been corrupted or infected in some way.

MSE is still my chosen Antivirus, and is updated daily with no problems found in any daily scans. SAS has not even reported tracking cookies for several days, and not even one found by Spybot S&D (installed since no cookies were found) -

There are no redirects as in a normal infection, or any Fake AV signs on the desktop, just this ?? jammed Java prpblem that I can see -

Hi noknojon,

I don't think this is malware-related, but I'll see what I can do for you. :)

Can you elaborate on this a little please?

How are you "checking" it? What says it isn't recognized as being installed?

Thank you Chris -

The one thing I did not add in my intro was that several "normal" online sites also have slowed in their responses in the last 2 or 3 days. No odd sites or game sites (I am not a gamer), and several desktop icons are now just shown as "basic" square icons, without any usual picture etc, just a name below. These include MBAM, Google Earth, ImgBurn, iTunes, and a couple more -

Two days ago I was helping someone to do normal updates, so I decided to check my version as I have had 7 Update 5 for a while now and wanted to be sure it was still current. Normally the "circle" will go round and reply back that you have the current version installed, or leads to the update.

This now only returns with "No Working Java was Found on your System".

So I attempt to uninstall and re-install the latest version by deleting from ADD / REMOVE, and get an error message that "Installation was not completed", which is incorrect since I have checked a week earlier.

Add / Remove also makes a quick mention of Java 7 update 4, which is odd since I never installed Update 4 ??

Next I follow Step 2 in my normal canned and get a similar message (Java Is Not Installed).

I attempt online and offline, removal and re-installing and it always ends at the last few seconds that "The System Cannot Find The Registry Key" -

Several ImageShack links are below -

My standard Java canned for update / removal is as follows ->>

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/...d/installed.jsp

Note: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it.

•Run JavaRa.exe (Vista/Win 7 users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. - Then click Remove Older Versions.

•Accept any prompts.

This will not work for me at this time, or if I click on the Java icon in Control Panel, there is no response except for "The System Cannot Find The Registry Key", where you can usually just click the second Tab that says "Update", and tells you the version is OK or outdated and then takes you to updates.

Howdy, John.

If you're still having this issue---- here's my standard reply re Java runtime:

  • Download the latest version of >> Windows Offline << from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Get the Offline version that corresponds to your "bit-tedness" of your Windows (32-bit or 64-bit)
How to determine whether a computer is running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser(s).
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed. :excl:
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u5-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
    ( jre-7u5-windows-x64.exe if this is a 64-bit Windows o.s.)

  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup) javaicon.gif
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked

      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files

[*]Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window

Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.

[*]Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window

Small tweaks for Java runtime, since most all users do not need to load Java at each Windows startup:

Click Advanced Tab. Expand the Miscellaneous item.

UN-check the line Java quick starter

Press Apply then OK. Close the applet when done.

To test your Java Run-time, you may go to this page http://www.java.com/...help/testvm.xml

When all is well, you should see Java Version: Java 7 Update 5 from Sun Microsystems Inc.

Hi Maurice, and thanks for any advice -

The sytem is XP Pro SP3 32-bit, fully (M/soft) updated. The quote from Java check page is as below =>>

The page should refresh and display your environment within 10-60 sec.

If it is taking longer, your browser may not be using the latest JRE or there is a problem with your installation

The test took more than 60 seconds (about 90 seconds) - Reply was "No working Java was detected on your system".Image 1. -

Java still can not be removed from Add / Remove and Java icon will not open in Control Panel. Images 2. and 3. -

I rebooted twice, each time, after trying to remove from Add / Remove. The (old ?) 7 update 5 still exists there.

These instructions do not work, as I have done this several times over several days, including over night shutdowns.

•Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser(s).

•Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.

•Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java) in the name.

•Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

•Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

•Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

I have the Offline Version on the desktop, jre-7u5-windows-i586.exe, but removal of any Java is not ........

These 3 images below continue to show - 1. Java is Not Installed - 2. Registry Key error - 3. Fatal error during Installation -

However during one of my later attempts at removal in Add / Remove did mention, removed 7 Update 4 - I never installed 7 U 4 -

<shaking head-not exactly sure-whats happening>

You'd made sure your XP Add-or-Remove Programs no longer showed any older Java runtime (prior to Java v 7/5 ).

Logoff and Restart fresh.

Get and run JavaRa

Download -- to your Desktop -- JavaRa.Zip from either of these two sites:

http://prm753.bchea..../click.php?id=9
http://www.majorgeek...vaRa_d5967.htmlUnzip the download. This will create a new Folder, JavaRa on your Desktop.
Double click this new Folder to open it, and double click the file within: JavaRa to execute the program.
Click the button: Remove Older Versions.
Agree to the cleanup operation by clicking Yes. After a moment, a notice will appear that a log file has been produced. Click OK. Close the Notepad view that opens.
Click the button: Other Tasks. Choose these options:
Remove Useless JRE Files
Remove Startup Entry
Remove JavaRa Logfile
Click Go. When it finishes, click OK to close the panel, and then Exit the program.
Delete the download, and the unzipped folder and all contents.

Logoff & Restart once more (just to be safer ). Oh, yes, make sure all your browsers are closed at this point.

When all ready, RUN the new Java 7/5 setup file.

I did an ESET online scan that produced this -

Target - C:\Documents and Settings\John.JOHN - 1E5571CE01\My Documents\hjthotkey3.exe - probably a variant of Win32/Agent.LDGSBEI trojan

Infected Files : 1

Current scan result:

Threats found!

Win32/Agent.LDGSBEI trojan

EDIT -

Sorry but none of those links seem to work ??

So, you deleted that file, right ? You should also start your AV, do an Update run >> full scan.

Sorry on the javara link. It had got grunged. Instead, here is a good link at SourceForge http://sourceforge.net/projects/javara/files/latest/download

Yes, deleted, plus just did another clean scan, but was never picked up by MSE in a full or normal (quick) daily scan.

Nothing still works - I followed all the directions, then logged out, closed browsers and rebooted.

The Offline download still returns the same errors as always, as in the ImgShack pictures, and it is still in Add/Remove returning all the same errors -

REVO uninstaller may be the only option, as I have not used it yet ??

Your thoughts on this ?

Also posted in Singular Labs forum, as their removal / update is identical -

Thanks - John -

This is the Offline Fail -

John,

It may be a bad download. Delete it. Do a new "Offline" file download.

Try once only --- Revo Uninstaller to see if it has a trace of Java & if so delete.

Restart system. Turn off your antivirus, just in case. Turn off any other "security" monitors, just in case.

Then try one time, to install the Java runtime setup.

Hi Maurice -

Revo has 2 versions listed as on the system Updates 4 and 5 ??

I will try to fully remove both and anything related, with Revo, then try a clean off line install again with your canned (from my text editor) -

Current - Well ... Revo seems to have removed All installations of Java and anything related to it.

I now have 7 Update 5 installed and it seems to be active according to the checks, and the Control Panel Java icon now works.

Also all Antivirus etc was set to disabled while I deleted and installed.

From much reading, and following your canned version, everything was removed / reinstalled and is operating again.

If it is OK with you, I will delete my canned and replace it with yours

Others have only had success with Revo and a Full removal then installed from zero -

I also deleted the folder at C:\Program Files\ Java first to make sure there was nothing blocking any new versions.

There still seems to be no reason for the failures, but their site still says there are (unknown) problems with 7 Update 5.

Most places say Revo is the only way to do this, if it fails, as Update 4 seems to not mix with Update 5

I assume this will be placed in Solved now :)

Thank You again Maurice -

You're welcome John. Apologies to Chris if I seemed to have hijacked this thread. I'd thought much earlier this was in Pc Help. ah, well.

Yes, this will be closed now.

Cheers.
