Installing Malwarebytes as a 64-bit application in Windows 7 Home Premium

Recommended Posts

I have a 2 month old HP Pavillion with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I just downloaded Malwarebytes from the recommended link and received the following file:

When I try to install it, after providing Admin access, I'm asked to select a destination location. It's defaulting to C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

My question is why is it asking to install to a directory named x86 if it's supposed to be a 64-bit install? Doesn't x86 reference 32-bit architecture?

The reason this caught my eye is because recently, in Task Manager, I've noticed that a lot of processes are now running with a *32 after their name. This was not the case when I first started using the machine. But now, the overwhelming majority of processes have that *32 after them.

For example:

chrome.exe *32

SkyDrive.exe *32

AvastUI.exe *32

rundll32.exe *32

hpsysdrv.exe *32

Is there anything I need to do or is there a different file to download to ensure that Malwarebytes will run as a 64-bit application?

Greetings and welcome :)

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a 32 bit application, however it uses 64 bit drivers on x64, but the installer is the same for both x86 and x64 operating systems. The installer will install the correct version of the drivers for your operating system (x64 in this case), but the program files themselves are 32 bit. That's why you're seeing what you're seeing in task manager and why it installs into the x86 folder by default.
