windows 7 update not working

Hi can anyone help please I still have a problem from searchbrowsing trogan, removed thankfully by one of your brilliant members I am sure the remnants are preventing me from doing any updates it also appears to have removed all my printer drivers.Its really frustating

Hello peppercat.

Your prior case was cleared up on June 16. You may have to re-install your printer drivers from the printer-maker. Check the manufacturer's support site.

What Windows 7 update do you refer to? Windows Update ??

Start >> type in cmd.exe and Right-Click on cmd.exe & select Run as Administrator & allow run to get a command-prompt window

type in

net stop wuauserv <enter-key>

EXIT <enter-key>

N.B. That will temporarily stop the windows update automatic service. On your next Windows restart, it will be on again.

Go to Windows Explorer.

Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.

Modify following as appropriate.

If your Windows folder is C:\Windows.

Look at this folder

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download <<<--- this folder

Delete all the contents of the Download folder.

Next,

Download this zip file from here http://sdrv.ms/Kp1lc3 so we can get a report.

Save the zip file to a unique folder.

Extract the contents. Then double-click the vbs file to start it.

You will get a Notepad report named UpdateHistory.txt located in your %temp% (temporary file folder).

The topmost entries (at the top of the file) are the most recent update items.

Copy the topmost 2 pages and then paste into your reply here.

Hi Maurice thankyou for your help I am not very techie but would like to try.I have tried your instructions but cannot seem to get a report for you it comes up as Windows Script Box with error 0xc8000222 code C8000222 and goes no further

Let's have you use NOTEPAD & do some research in the Windows Update log (using Notepad)

usually at C:\Windows\Windowsupdate.log or C:\WINNT\Windowsupdate.log

Copy and Paste here the last 70 lines out of that log, for review.

Go to near end of the log for latest entries and look for error notations.

You can use CTRL+END keyboard keys to get to the end of the file. Then get the last 70 lines & copy & paste here, in reply

Close and exit any open work documents or program windows you opened.

1a. Open Internet Explorer (only!) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336 [ignore the title & Symptoms].

1b. Dismiss/close the "automated troubleshooter" pop-up! - then...

1c. Ignoring any "Not recommended" or similar warnings, run Fix It 50202 in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes. [1]

2. Logoff & Reboot & then run a manual check for updates at Windows Update, etc., etc...

When you reach Windows Update, do a Custom scan for updates. Take (accept) the ones marked Critical or Important.

Decline any that are marked as "optional".

Have infinite patience while it scans and does it's work.

When it prompts you to Restart Windows, please do that. Allow it to restart.

IF and only if you get an "error" or "exception/failure" message, I will need the complete so called "failure code" and description (if you see it).

Please have good patience, this is not very complicated. Ask me if you have questions.

[1] Running the Fixit in aggressive mode will result in your history of installed updates to be "empty" when viewed online at Windows Updates.

What is actually installed on your system will not be affected.

Thankyou so much for your help I followed your instructions and have now got updates back,it gathered 101 first time, I did it again just to check another 12 ready to come on board BRILLIANT.

Only 3 failed 2 of which were recommended and 1 important, that one was

Security update for Internet explorer 8 for Windows 7 KB2544521

It looks as if I have been upgraded to Explorer 9 so I do not know if that is relevant

I now need to set this up securely with regular updates scans etc

Is there anything else I need to do or advice you can offer please

BRAVO ! Kudos ! Awesome !

IF you got IE 9, that is great. Yes, you can then ignore anything IE8 (and windows update will no longer show any IE8 stuff).

What I would suggest is that, at minimum, you have your Automatic Windows Updates be set (at minimum) to Notify but not automatically download.

Also, know that Microsoft releases security fixes on a monthly schedule on 2nd Tuesday of each month. (Though, infrequently, (ie, on rare occasions) it will push out critical updates on a un-scheduled basis). So.....near the evening of the 2nd Tuesday or by the next weekend that follows, check on your Windows Updates.

You said you had a couple of failures. Let's do this 1 time,

Let's flush the download folder & then do a measured retry.

Start >> type in cmd >> press the Ctrl+Shift+Enter keyboard combination and cmd.exe will be launched as if you selected Run as Administrator. You will then see a User Account Control prompt asking if you would like to allow the Command Prompt to be able to make changes on your computer. Click on the Yes button and you will now be at the Elevated Command Prompt.

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from Windows Update downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.

type in

net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

Reboot & then run a manual check for updates at Windows Update, etc., etc...

When you reach Windows Update, do a Custom scan for updates. Take (accept) the ones marked Critical or Important.

Decline any that are marked as "optional".

Internet Explorer is not used by the automatic updates module. Internet Explorer is required for online Windows Update.

But, why would someone "disable" IE ???
