Running computer at 98% Ram used from start

Have you looked at Task Manager, and reviewed the list of running of running Applications (under Applications Tab)?

Do you see any unusual ones?

Does this pc have a fully updated/current antivirus app? and when did you do the last scan?

Ditto with MBAM ......

It is not unsual for the RAM or cpu usage to flux over time. But if pc is essentially idle (and no scheduled scans are running) the Performance tab display should be rather static.

Press Windows-key on keyboard. In search box, type in system information click on it. See if you can copy system information summary.

Click on the Software Environment element and then Startup Programs link on the left-side pane.

Copy the list of startup applications.

How much physical RAM memory does this pc have? and reply to my other questions.

You should try (once) moving these programs "out" of being started with each Windows startup:


MS messenger

Open Office

Photoshop Elements


Then restart the system fresh.

Do a couple of online scans at one of the following, and see if anything is detected.

ESET Online Scanner

BitDefender Quickscan

Trend Micro Housecall

F-Secure Online Scanner

Panda ActiveScan

hmmm ...

it may be that when it "wakes up" it is calling for updates to some programs (like the AV/AM) , trying to load and bring MS Messenger up to speed , etc .

this will cause high ram usage for a short period of time and cause the comp to be slowed down a bit .

I thought the problem was solved. My brother was able to use it yesterday without the RAM shooting up to high heaven.

It was only on for about 9 hours and the ram went back up to about 80% with only MSN running.

I thought it had an overheating problem... Since the computer has a problem where the vent is blocked by its own monitor.
