Possible Infection?

Recommended Posts

Last night my computer was acting very strange. There was hardly any memory usage or processor usage; however, I was lucky if I could get anything to work. Explorer seemed to be in a constantly changing/freezing state. For example, my task bar would change from an aero color to a blue/grey color and was non responsive. When it turned back Aero I knew I *may* be able to *try* and click the start ball; however, most of the time this just turned the startbar blue/grey again.

Eventually I was able to get to system restore and restore my computer to the night before (before Windows Update) and things seemed to run fine... Windows Update again happened this morning (3am) and today my computer is froze again.

After an hour, I was able to do the System Restore again (going back to right before this update didn't fix it, I had to go back to the same one that I went back to yesterday).

I'm not yet convinced if this is an update issue causing problems (rolling back to last night should have fixed this morning's) or if I have something resident on my computer.

Logs posted below, hopefully someone has an idea?

Hello and welcome to MalwareBytes forums.

Step 1

1. Go >> Here << and download ERUNT

(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)

2. Install ERUNT by following the prompts

(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)

3. Start ERUNT

(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)

4. Choose a location for the backup

(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).

5. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked

6. Press OK

7. Press YES to create the folder.

Step 2

To show all files:

  • Go to your Desktop
  • Double-Click the Computer icon.
  • From the menu options, Select Tools, then Folder Options.
  • Next click the View tab.
  • Locate and uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
