Conputer is acting strange

Here's a HJT log of of my XP machine. I can't run an online scan from either ewido or housecall.antivirus. My AVG won't update. I did run SAS and MBAM scans and didn't really note anything other than tracking cookies.

Is there anything suspicious in here?

I ran the scan - it took about 3 hours. I didn't see that it found anything. When I FINISHED the program, I must have exited incorrectly because I didn't see the log file. I'm running the scan again.

Is there anything in the HJT log file that looks suspicious?

Nothing that really rattles my cage...you have a couple out dated pieces of software that should go. AVG7 is no longer supported. You should uninstall it and install their latest version 8. The program Acrobat Reader 6.0 is also out of date and exploited. Uninstall what you have, and install the latest version Here.

When you finish up, just disregard the results of your msrt scan. Your first scan results would have been what I was after. Anything that was removed during the first scan of course, would not be an issue during your second scan.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

If you have problems with that link, you can also download it from Here or Here

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here
and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.

[*]If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.

[*]The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.

[*]When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".

[*]Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

[*]Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.

[*]Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

[*]When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.

[*]The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

[*]Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM. In addition, please post a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks!

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.

Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Looks good. I have just one more concern. Your HP tool box references a very old version of Java that has been exploited ages ago. Let's see an uninstall log:

Open HijackThis. Click-->Open the Misc Tools section-->Open Uninstall Manager-->Save list...and save the list to your Desktop, then close HijackThis.

A notepad file will open. Copy and paste the content of that text file back here on your next reply. By the way, how's it running for you now? Are you having any other issues? Thanks!

The machine seems to be running alright. What I'm noticing is that I can get thru a SAS scan. Each time I try, after about 5 minutes, the machine freezes. No mouse, no keyboard. I've removed and re-downloaded and installed SAS - same problem. The other thing I've noticed is also with SAS. When I go to SCAN, it takes about a minute for the drives to show up. It used to be instantaneous.

With the Java, I've been unable to do an online scan from ewido I think it has to do with Java. I've used the Add/Remove Control Panel to remove Java and the reinstall from Sun's site.

Here's the log:

OK, I'm not seeing what I was expecting. You have no other java installations that need to be removed so why hp tool box references an old version is a mystery. You could remove the hp tool box. It's not needed either.

When was your last disk cleanup and defrag?

No reason to avoid ccleaner. I use it. I have mine configured to run on system startup...that way, there's a good disk cleanup that occurs with each reboot. Not a bad idea if you gave it some thought. Let us know how the system is behaving now and if you are having any other issues. Thanks!

I took some time to go over your list of installed programs a bit more. I doubt any of them relate to your issue but I should run down the list of things I took note of for you:

Adobe Reader 8.1.0 is out of date. You should uninstall it and install the latest version Here.

AVG Anti-Rootkit Free is no longer supported so you may as well uninstall this one. Your AVG version 8 is sufficient...just remember to keep it updated if you don't have a paid subscription for it.

The tool below is shareware...you need a license for it to work. Is this a paid subscription or are you still using it as a trial? If so, you should uninstall this since windows does the identical thing as this software claims to do...it's just not necessary and uses up more disk space than is required.

HDD Regenerator

The program below:

Motherboard Monitor 5

...is no longer being developed by it's author. It's fine to leave it if it works for you but if your motherboard's manufacturer is one that refused to cooperate with the author of this program then you may as well uninstall this too.

Mozilla Firefox (2.0.0.20) is out of date. Just open Firefox and it will download the latest version for you.

The program OpenOffice.org 2.0 is an excellent product. I use it...however, the latest version is Here.

Paltalk Messenger is a problem...you should uninstall this one too.

The program RegCure 1.2.0.4 is overzealous in my opinion. These registry cleaners are all overrated. A user almost never even notices any improvement whatsoever from removing what these programs suggest. In many cases, and I believe RegCure is one of them, the entries presented for removal are legitimate and necessary registry entries. If it were me, I would restore every single backup that this program may have made then uninstall it.

The program ShredIt PC is another needless program on your system. With the likes of trusted and time tested applications as Spybot Search and Destroy, you can use the shredding feature that it has available as well as take advantage of it's scanning and infection preventative features.

You have many programs on your system that I would not have. You should go over the list and think to yourself..."Do I use this or not"...also take a look at the programs you installed that are trial versions. If you are no longer evaluating them uninstall them and uninstall the others that you decided upon.

I believe this is also out of date...UltraVNC v1.0.2.

Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and post back the report it creates:

  • Download MGADiag to your desktop.
  • Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program
  • Click "Continue"
  • Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
  • Click the "Copy" button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard.
  • Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report back here in your next reply.

Thanks vet - yes, for some reason this computer has a lot of programs. I hardly use this machine. Sometimes I use it just to check out a program. For instance, Open Office. I don't need it as I have MS Office. I don't remember why RegCure or HDD Regenerator were loaded. I will look at cleaning this machine of unnecessary software soon.
