possible for mbam to find threat on web page?

Recommended Posts

I have purchased and been using mbam (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (PRO) 1.61.0.1400) and it is up to date. While surfing an obvious attempt to have me download a virus popped up. There were several pages open so I dont know which one cause the problem. Anyway, I was wondering why mbam did not spot the problem page. Maybe there is no way to tell. I did not and do not intend to click "Clean Computer" or the show details. I have not tried closing the box yet but I suspect it might pop up another box asking me if I really want to close it. When that happens I generally bring up task manager and kill chrome or iexplorer. In this case, I had chrome running so it was chrome that allowed this site to pop up this message.

Question: Is this a virus attempt (as I suspect) or a real warning from Security Essentials?

Question: If there anything else I can do other than bring up the task manager and kill chrome if I cannot close this dialog box when clicking on the "X".

Hello and :welcome:

Looks like a real popup from MSE. In this point in time even if you open task manager and kill chrome.exe, the file has already been downloaded to your computer.

Your next course of action at this point is to click Show Details and see where the file is located and then take the appropriate action to either clean the computer, if you can choose to ignore it if you know for a fact that its a false positive from MSE. More than likely it needs to be cleaned/deleted. Give me the name of the file and the location and perhaps we can help from there.

Why would it say "Clean PC" in the instructions. Microsoft has a lot of bean counters and they should easily spot that there is no "Clean PC" button on the dialog box. I think it is a fake attempt to download a virus.

I have 4 instances of chrome.exe running and I suspect one of those is that fake dialog box. I will leave it up on my monitor for a while in case it is a real MSE but I dont think it is based on the button "Clean Computer" and being asked to click "Clean PC". That does not seem right.

If you want, close out all 4 instances of chrome.exe that you have, I suspect the MSE dialoge box will remain. Also you can just double click on your MSE icon in your system try and it will show the infection there as well asking you to take action on that suspected file.

Also by the way, I have run a test, and the popup you see is exactly the same one I see if I put a virus file in a folder on my computer. I get the same popup and when i click open MSE I get a button I can push that says Clean PC. So I suspect that your antivirus MSE is doing its job and trying to proctect you. You need to clean that infected file.
