SMART Virus help

Recommended Posts

I have a laptop with Windows 7 that is infected with the S.M.A.R.T. virus. Starting it in Safe Mode seems to be the best solution so far. I have checked "No proxy" in the connection settings. I don't know where to start and I know you will need some logs to view.

Thanks and I will get all requested information for you upon request.

Hi,

are you able to boot to safemode with networking?

Please run the following:

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)

There are 6 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the next one.

Note: Vista and Windows 7 users need to right click on the file and choose Run as administrator

You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

NEXT

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide

  1. Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
    * IMPORTANT !!! Place ComboFix.exe on your Desktop
  2. Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
You can get help on disabling your protection programs here
  3. Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  4. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  5. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  6. Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: If you encounter a message "illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion" and no programs will run - please just reboot and that will resolve that error.

Hi,

You should be able to boot normally now, let me know if you can,

please run the following:

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

NEXT

hi,

Please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".

Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:

Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.

This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

File::
C:\Users\Elizabeth\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\40\7a0ff328-21be06ae
C:\Users\Elizabeth\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\41\3d3fb229-67355cf9

ClearJavaCache::

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;

2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;

3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";

4.Type in the file name: CFScript

5.Click Save ...

CFScriptB-4.gif

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix may request an update; please allow it.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

**Note**

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.

  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.

NEXT
Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /rp /s
    DRIVES
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Post both logs

I've tried to run ComboFix on my normal desktop but I cannot get anything to open. So I opened my desktop under Safe Mode /w Networking and I can then complete the instructions up to a point. I get a message telling me to close my Sophos antivirus and Sophos Anti-spyware. While I am in Safe Mode, I cannot close these operations. The options to do this are grayed out and I am unable to choose them. Should I just continue with the ComboFix even though I cannot close out the Sophos?

I tried to reboot and run again - didn't work.

I have tried to delete Sophos through the Control Panel and I cannot. I get a message that the Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.

I did try to log on the normal desktop and could not. I can click on an icon but nothing happens. I can click on Start and my programs but nothing opens. I click on Shut Down and nothing happens. I have to shut down by holding down the power button.

Please try Revo Uninstaller to remove Sophos

Download and install the Revo Uninstaller

  • Double click the new Revo Uninstaller icon on your desktop to start the program
  • Scroll through the listed programs and Right Click on the program you wish to uninstall (Sophos)
  • From the pop out menu choose Uninstall
  • Click Yes to the confirmation dialogue
  • In the next window select the Advanced mode
  • Click Next to start uninstalling the program
  • Answer Yes to confirm the uninstall
  • When the program has completed the four steps, click Next to allow the program to search for leftovers
  • Once complete, click Next, then Finish
  • Repeat the above steps for any other programs you wish to remove.

I downloaded the program as instructed. If I try to run it on normal mode, I cannot because nothing works that way. When I run it in Safe Mode w/ network I get the same message "The Windows Install Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

Your thoughts?

It would appear as though the infection has corrupted a number of your services

please try the following:

Windows Repair Tool

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install the program then run

Go to step 2 and allow it to run Disc check

Capture3.gif

Once that is done then go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC

Capture.gif

On the the Start Repairs tab. Click the Advanced Mode and click Start

Capture1.gif

Please ensure that items seen in the image below are ticked as well as the Repair MSI (Windows Installer) & Set Windows Services to Default Setup.

Click on box next to the Restart System when Finished. Then click on Start

ok, so I ran the previous program and my desktop in normal mode looks pretty good except I do not have a background anymore. However, I tried to run Firefox and after the initial webpage appeared my PC locked up. I had to push the power button and get back in with Safe Mode w/ Network.

It certainly seems as though this infection has corrupted your system more than what we usually see.

I would try a startup repair with Win7 and see if that resolves anything:

Have you been able to run an updated Malwarebytes in normal mode or will it only run in safe mode?
