NOD32 MBAM USB freeze issue

Recommended Posts

I am running XP and have both NOD and MBAM Pro. I never had any issues relying on mbam playing nicely with other AV but since upgrading NOD from version 4 to Version 5 I experienced the USB freezes described above. I had no idea what caused them until I stumbled across the post on Wilders.

I surprised that there is no response to this original post here - does nobody else have this issue or are mbam users not using NOD? If anyone is using both programs together without these USB freeze issues on XP, I would love to hear if there is someway to do that ( ideally without crippling the protection of either program).

Hi tomoz,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We are currently investigating this issue alongside ESET in order to determine what the cause of the freezing is. Should we find a workaround until an official patch is deployed to fix this problem, I will be sure to post it here. :)

I am running ESET Smart Security 5 (5.2.9.1) along side Malwarebytes PRO (1.61.0.1400) with no such issues what so ever. I am running this same combination on two other

computers in my household with no such issues also. All computers are running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with service pack 1 and are fully updated.

I also have exclusions set in both ESET Smart Security and Malwarebytes PRO.

This thread from the ESET forums might help you tomoz http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=309335

I hope this helps. :)

The issue with connecting to a USB external drive causing a freeze only happens on Windows XP SP3, and does not occur with the latest version of ESET (5.2.9.1). The best solution would be to update to this version of ESET. However, we'd like to continue our investigation and determine what was going wrong so that we can see if there's anything we can do to prevent such a thing from happening in future releases of MBAM.

Thanks for the input, Seagull.

Which service pack do you have installed?

Also the ESET suite includes the NOD32 Antivirus, which is the same deal except the suite offers a Firewall and a Anti-Spam also.

updated to 1.61.0.1400 but that made no difference

then tried to temporarily deactivate Mbam for testing - noticed that nothing I did within the gui was sufficient as the mbam service kept running. Trying to disable via task manager did not work but resulted in another freeze. Following rcdailey's hints here http://www.wildersse...1&postcount=165 I managed to suspend mbam.

Turning on my external usb drive then worked without freeze. I then tried to do it the other way, disabling NOD and only running Mbam but again one of the services of eset kept running and I did not feel like figuring out how to fully stop NOD.

To me this seems to confirm that some persistent services between the two programs are conflicting, though only when trying to plug in or turn on some usb device. I would not mind so much if there were an easy way to disable (fully) one of the two programs temporarily (ideally via the gui) when having to use a usb drive.

Hi tomoz,

Have you tried setting exlclusions for Malwarebytes in ESET NOD32. To access the exclusions, right click NOD32 tray icon, select Advanced setup...

On the left hand side, expand Computer

Click Exclusions

Use the "Add..." button to browse to the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder. You can either select the entire folder or just the following executables within:

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe

Let me know if this works for you, or if it's still freezes.
