Possible malware infection?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a 3 month old Vaio notebook that just started acting strangely. The Bluetooth and USB interface has stopped working. When you insert a USB device, it beeps that a device has been inserted, but the balloon pops up saying USB device unrecognized. This is a trackball I've always used (I eliminated the trackball as a problem by inserting another known good trackball with the same result). There has been no new software installed and, since it's a laptop, no new hardware either. The laptop is running Windows Vista 64 bit SP1. MBAM and spybot don't detect anything. NOD32 is running in the background and hasn't detected anything. As soon as I finish posting this, I'm running a full scan with NOD32 and a-squared.

Here are MBAM and HijackThis logs. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Nothing stands out in the logs to show an infection.

This could just be a common USB issue. I would check with the MFG since it's brand new and see what they have to say.

I don't KNOW that I'm infected, but I thought it unusual that 2 unrelated systems should fail (Bluetooth AND USB) at the same time. That's what led me to consider malware. Can you suggest other steps to verify?

Thanks,

Panagiotis

  • Root Admin

Download to the desktop: Dr.Web CureIt

  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
    check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

PANDA ONLINE SCAN

Please go >here< to run Panda's ActiveScan

  • Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC now button
  • A new window will open...click the Scan Now button
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan. Note: This may take a couple of minutes
  • Run the ActiveX control, if requested. The screen will then show the scanning progress - the scan will take a while to finish. Please be patient.
  • When the scan has finished, click on Export To
  • Save the file as Activescan.txt to your Desktop
  • Close the Activescan window then go to your Desktop
  • Double-click on Activescan.txt and it will open in Notepad
  • In Notepad, click Edit > Select all, then Edit > Copy
  • Reply to this thread and click Ctrl+V to paste the log in your reply

The scans found a virus, but it was latent in an archive. It's now deleted. Here are the logs. First is the HiJack this, then Panda, then Dr.Web. It's beginning to look like it is a hardware problem I think.

Thanks for your help,

Panagiotis

You might want to do a disk check as well

Click on START and type in CMD in the search and it should show on the menu, then Right click and select Run as administrator and say okay to the UAC request for elevated rights.

Then run this: CHKDSK C: /F then press Y to agree to run it after restart, then restart the PC.

Beyond this not sure what else could be the issue as all the scanners are coming back pretty much clean except for minor items.
