MBAM and Windows XP SP2

Recommended Posts

My computer is 5 y.o. and has Windows XP SP2 (it has 512 MB RAM memory and 1.6 GHz Celeron processor and therefore it's not advisable to upgrade it to SP3).MBAM 1.60 version had quite a few compatible problems for many users.Do you think that the new 1.61 version will work properly with Windows XP SP2 ?

Greetings :)

Yes, the primary issue with 1.60 had to do directly with ZoneAlarm Free and a few other third party firewall products. We resolved this problem completely in 1.60.1, and 1.61 doesn't have the issue either and you should have no troubles running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on XP SP2.

Not sure where you heard a 1.6ghz processor isnt enough?

Hardware requirements

To install SP3 on a single computer, your computer must have a CD-ROM drive and at least the following:

  • A 233 megahertz (MHz) processor
  • 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM
  • 900 MB of available disk space during installation

That is right from microsoft.

Running xp sp2 leaves you wide open for all kinds of exploits.

You actually dont even need the cdrom driver with built in windows update.

Windows updates are a very important part of security along with good security software. The negatives of not being uptodate far out weigh anything else.

Sp3 really doesnt add more features to slow anything down. It just patches all the holes malware and exploits use to infect machines.

As an aside, for a computer like that, upgrading to 1GB or 2GB of RAM will make a huge difference in performance. I had a similar setup that really slowed down over the years. Replacing the 512MB of RAM with 2GB (which is very cheap nowadays, and wasn't when I bought it!) did a world of difference.
