Brand New Netbook infected from factory?

Recommended Posts

Hello. I have a brand-new Acer Aspire One Netbook (XPSP3) that I just started up yesterday. I installed Comodo Firewall + Antivirus and ran an initial scan which came up clean. Then I installed SuperAntiSpyware and ran a scan - 22 unidentified items were flagged. I researched a couple of them to find that they were related to Google Desktop, Google BHO, etc... Since I have not initialized the "crapware" yet, I assumed that they were probably harmless, but wanted to verify with Malwarebytes. So I installed and ran mbam.exe. The only result I got was a registry key

infection: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\kt_bho.KettleBho

I don't see much on the web about this, except one place that says it is a virus. So, I rans the following online scans: Panda, Kapersky & Symantec. All of them came up clean.

Here is a copy of the HJT log. I would appreciate it very much if one of you experts could tell me if I really have anything to worry about, or if this is a false alarm. Thanks.

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

When we're done you can go back and install the latest version but for now please do not install any.

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply

Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.

C:\Program Files\Java

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Then run the following please.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix to your
DESKTOP
:
how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

NOTE!!:

You must save and run
ComboFix.exe
on your DESKTOP and not from any other folder.

Also,
DO NOT
click the mouse or launch any other applications while this is running or it may stall the program

Additional links to download the tool:

Note:

The
Windows Recovery Console
will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click
    Yes
to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

  • Please post the
    C:\ComboFix.txt
    along with a
    new HijackThis log
so we may continue cleaning the system.

Well, I'm not having any luck runnning combofix. I keep getting an error message "can not access" 32788R22FWJFW\hidec.exe "you may not have permission to access.." I have tried marking the program as safe in Comodo Firewall. Then I took all the files in C:\32788R22FWJFW\ and marked them as "safe". I tried to "run as" and untick the box that says "protect my computer from harmful..." I am at a loss. I disabled the firewall and defense+security level, then closed the program and tried again to mark it as safe, but still I keep getting the error. I even tried switching to installation mode before exiting Comodo and still I get the error. hmmm.....

Well if you can't run CF and you can't disable your AV enough then please download, burn, run this CD. If you can't do it on your own system see if you can do it from a friends system or a work system and run it on your infected system.

Please download this, place a blank CD in your burner and double-click on the downloaded file. It will automatically burn the CD for you.

At the bottom left should be 2 flags. If you use your mouse and click on the British flag the interface should switch to English for you.

Have it scan ALL files. There is no way that I'm aware of to save a log, so you may need to write down any special errors or infections found and their outcome.

Requires access to a working computer with a CD/DVD burner to create a bootable CD.

    Avira AntiVir Rescue System
Avira AntiVir Rescue System is a Linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore. Thus it is possible to:

  • repair a damaged system,
  • rescue data,

  • scan the system for virus infections.

Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD. You can then use this CD/DVD to boot your computer.
The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is updated several times a day so that the most recent security updates are always available.

Rescue CD screen resolution problem

Please see the post here if you're unable to view the entire screen of Avira.

Not easily. Okay please try this program then.

Download to the desktop: Dr.Web CureIt

  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
    check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

I have the scan finished and it has found several items in the files created when combofix tried to run; it also has found several in system volume\restore. I can select them all but it does not give me an option to move or delete or cure or renane - all those buttons are grayed out. Not sure what to do next....help? I am attaching a screenshot of the results.

Okay that's fine.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Then delete Combofix. Click on START - RUN and type in Combofix.exe /U and remove it.

Download a new copy and after disabling your AV try running it again.

Hi again. I read how to disable/close Comod Firewall and that is exactly what I had done before, but I will try it again.

I tried to run combofix uninstall, and it still shows on the desktop. I don't understand why I am having so many problems! LOL

Just to let you know, here is what I am going to do:

disable Comodo

shut down SuperAntiSpyware free

run combofix uninstaller

if it doesn't work I will just send it to the recycle bin and then delete it from there.

reinstall combofix from a new download

try to run it

I will report back shortly.

Here's the latest: I went into add/remove programs and removed Google Toolbar from the computer. Then I rebooted into safe mode with networking and logged in to the Administrator account. From there I was able to run combofix.exe /u. After that, I manually deleted all the folders it had created in C:\. I will now attempt to download and run a new combofix.exe.

Well, I got to the "combofix is preparing to run" and then I got a message telling me that Comodo was running, so I exited. I opened Comodo, disabled the firewall and disabled the virus protection. Then I right-clicked and exited the program. Tried running combofix again and got the same message. I don't want to run it because it says it could even do machine damage with Comodo running. This firewall is ridiculous!

Hi again. Listen, I'm running out of time, as the owner of this netbook (my neighbor) needs it to take on a trip. I've deleted 1 redirector that SuperAntiSpyware found, and all the other scans have come up clean now. I'm wondering if you would please have a look at the HJT log now and see if anything looks suspicious? I think it may be okay. Thank you so much for your help!

p.s. the toolbar with no name is a google partner thing...

Well nothing currently stands out in the HJT log, but Malware often hides from HJT pretty easily these days.

It's up to you. If the system isn't demonstrating any Malware related activity and other Scanners come up clean then it might be.

I just don't have enough information to tell you for sure that it is.

I think you can see though that you have a weakness in that you need to probably learn either from the Web or the MFG how to repair or re-install the OS should the need arise in the future. I would also suggest obtaining an external USB CD/DVD drive to use with the unit.

So, for now solely based on HJT it looks okay. Again though Malware can easily hide from HJT so it alone is not a good indicator of being clean or not.

Well, I've run the following scans with no bad files found:

BitDefender (online)

SuperAntiSpyware Free

Malwarebytes

Comodo Anti-Virus Free

Kapersky Online scan

Symantec Online scan

Panda Online scan found this - WHAT/WHERE IS RECYCLERS? is that the recycle bin? or system restore?

C:\recycler\S-1-5-21-3739883344-645311128-637973202-500\Dc2.exe

C:\recycler\S-1-5-21-3739883344-645311128-637973202-500\Dc11.exe

Now I've searched the hard drive and can not find these files at all. And, since none of the other scans found these two, I am inclined to thing they are false positives.

But the system runs well, and exhibits no strange behavior whatsoever.

Yes, I see your point about system restoration - although these netbooks have a system recovery partition on the hard drive. Still if the hard drive fails, that is no good, is it! I will advise him your suggestion for a CD/DVD external USB drive - would be a very good investment!

Thank you so much foryour help. If we run into problems, I will be back! ;-)
