Disabling protection module and end process crash

Recommended Posts

Hello and :welcome:

Uncheck the Start Protection module with Windows and restart your computer, that should do the trick. Also killing the process will cause your computer to freeze due to the way Malwarebytes works in the kernal level. The process should not be killed.

If I untick that, will it always start my computer w/o starting Malwarebyte? If I untick it and restart, will enable protect module be unfaded? I want to be able to start it and stop it whenever without problems. Is that possible?

Yes if you have that unchecked Malwarebytes will not start automatically.

To disable and re-enable whenever you want do this by right clicking on the Malwarebytes tray icon and uncheck Enable Protection.

Even when I right click on Malwarebytes tray icon and uncheck Enable Protection, it is still on.

If the icon is grayed out then the protection is inactive. The checkbox is like that as the tray icon is still running, but the protection is still off. :)

Edit: You can also right click the tray icon and click "Exit" which will close Malwarebytes and uncheck the protection module box. :)

Even when the icon is grayed out, the picture above says the protection is enabled. I can't visit a site when it is grayed out, but when it is completely off, the site works fine.

Even when I exit, it seems to still be on since the site does not load.

When MBAM blocks a site just right click on the icon and select "add to ignore list", it will not block it after that. Easier and safer than disabling the protection module. However, when MBAM blocks a site you need to be careful.

I believe I can clear this up.

First off, there are 2 components of protection in Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. The first is malicious file execution blocking, which is controlled by the Enable Protection function in the tray menu as well as the Start file execution blocking when Windows starts. function in the Protection tab.

The second component of protection is malicious website blocking. It is controlled by the Website Blocking function in that tray as well as the Start malicious website blocking when protection module starts. function in the Protection tab.

If you exit the tray, both protection components are disabled. However, if a site was previously blocked by the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware website blocking function, even if you add that site to the Ignore List or disable website blocking, the site may still remain blocked because of Windows caching the previous connection attempt which was blocked. To eliminate that, you should be able to exit your internet browser and clear your temporary internt files/browser cache and then try visiting the website again.

Thanks for explaining this. How do I get the check box that is faded out in my pictures above to be unfaded?

It seems when I turn off "Enable Protection" and "Website Blocking" on the systems tray and try to turn them on, only "Enable Protection" turns on, but "Website Blocking" will stay unchecked. How do I fix this issue?

How do I find the list of sites it blocks and put it to my ignore list?

You need to be more clear on the problem you are facing. You are referring to the website blocking not the actual file blocking. There's a difference.

Right click the tray icon and select "Website Blocking" which will uncheck it. Then open a command prompt(Start/Accessories/Command Prompt) and type "ipconfig/flushdns" which will clear the DNS cache and unblock the site. You wish to restart your browser as well. To renable click the "Website Blocking" and it will recheck it.

I don't believe there is one. Exile or another staff member will have to comment on this.
