Automatic Updates?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to this forum (and MalwareBytes) so please bear with me. I'm running windows XP SP2 and currently have Eset Smart Security installed alongside MalwareBytes real-time protection. What I was wondering was if there is a way for MalwareBytes to perform automatic updates when a new definition database is released or do it have be done manually?

Greetings mr yoda and welcome.

The paid version of Malwarebytes does allow you to schedule automatic updates at a time of your choosing once each day. You can access the options for it under the Update tab in the program interface. Since definitions are released more often than just once a day I'd recommend setting it for as late in the day as you can (as long as it's a time you normally have your computer turned on) so that it's more likely to have the latest definitions installed. I've heard that the developers are looking into allowing for more frequent automatic updates in a future version. Also, please keep in mind that the Task Scheduler service needs to be set to automatic in Windows (this is the default, but some people turn it off).

If you need anything else just let us know. Good luck and safe surfing.

Thanks for the reply exile. Just one other question really. A lot of software has pop-ups when a nasty is stopped. Is this the case with MalwareBytes? The scans i've run have been clean so I know my machine isn't infected and I don't visit really dodgy sites (alright Facebook can be a bit suspect at times) but I just wondered whether i'm likely to know whether it will alert me to anything nasty.

Yes, with the pro version when a threat is detected by the realtime protection it does pop up a box (usually around the center of your screen) with the M symbol on it telling you what was detected and giving you the option to block/remove it or ignore it. In a scan it tells you threats were detected and instructs you to click Main Menu for details, where you are presented with the list of detected threats and given the option to quarantine or ignore the threats.

exile, thanks for that answer, I was wondering about that also. I have had the paid version for several months and have not had any popups, so now I know. My scans are always clean.

MBAM is an excellent product and I really like it, especially the 5 minute quick scan.
