Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix to your
DESKTOP
:
how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

NOTE!!:

You must save and run
ComboFix.exe
on your DESKTOP and not from any other folder.

Also,
DO NOT
click the mouse or launch any other applications while this is running or it may stall the program

Additional links to download the tool:

Note:

The
Windows Recovery Console
will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click
    Yes
to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

  • Please post the
    C:\ComboFix.txt
    along with a
    new HijackThis log
so we may continue cleaning the system.

Then Quit All Browsers including the one you're reading this in now.
Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

STEP 3

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

When we're done you can go back and install the latest version but for now please do not install any.

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.

FYI - Under step 2, I was instructed to place a check mark next to a number of things. I could not find the following things in the list after running HJT:

O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

And, I couldn't find two of these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6D794CB4-C7CD-4c6f-BFDC-9B77AFBDC02C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgGxWmkI.dll

Thank you.

I am far from knowledgable about these issues, but since it seems like things are (hopefully) getting better, I figured I would ask a few things before posting my newest logs if that was OK.

1) Thankfully, your help appears to have eliminated the constant bombardment of pop-up ads. But, another thing that tipped me off that I may have some issues with my computer is that my "google" search bar in the top right corner of my IE browser said "yoog search." Currently, that search bar still says "yoog search."

2) I noticed the following in the HJT log:

O23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE (file missing)

I am no longer running symantec antivirus on my computer, so I didn't know if there was something wrong with this still being on the computer. It is probably no big deal, but I just wanted to check.

3) I currently am running a Trend Micro antivirus on my computer. Obviously, that was insufficient to prevent what happened. Do you have any suggestions for preventing something like this in the future? For instance, should I run both Trend Micro and Malwarebytes (and anything else you would recommend)? Thank you for bearing with me despite my naivety.

I am sure you might have more advice, so I look forward to hearing what else I should do once we are finished with all this (like downloading new versions of Adobe and Java, etc.).

Thank you again for all of your help.

The Symantec is there because it was never fully removed. Go into your Control Panel, Add/Remove and look for LIVE UPDATE and remove it along with any other Symantec or Norton software if you're no longer running them.

As for the "yoog search" I thought that was already added to MBAM but maybe you have a newer version of that junk.

From within IE please go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and click on the RESET button.

Then run the CCleaner again and let me know if the "yoog search" is still there or not.

Yes we'll put back the other software when we're done.

This is fantastic. Thank you very much. "Yoog search" is gone.

I went into add/remove, but couldn't find anything labeled live update, symantec, or nortons. I thought I had removed it all when I removed it in the past, but it is no big deal to me so long as it isn't problematic to my computer. I just thought I would bring it to your attention in case you thought it might be a problem.

One other thing that I was hoping to do is download mozilla firefox to use as my browser instead of IE. I assume that this is recommended, but I wanted to check in with you, given your superior expertise on these matters, and see if there was a recommended site to download it from.

Thank you again!

One more thing I noticed in my add/remove programs tab - something called "contextual platform worldadmarketplace." Again, I really know very little of what I am talking about, but given the other "ad-related" junk that I have been deleting, I didn't know if this was something related or entirely different. So, I just wanted to check about it.

Thank you again for all of your patience and time.

Well if it were my system I would not leave the Norton stuff on there sucking up resources for nothing.

Please Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Choose like the 2003, 2005 version either should probably work and use it to manually remove any left over Norton stuff.

Please do not install Firefox just yet, but when ready the official download link is: Firefox Setup 3.0.6.exe

If you do go with Firefox then I would also suggest using the 2 following plugins. NoScript and Adblock Plus

The NoScript needs to be "trained for your browsing habits" but once you use it for a while and take the time to understand it a bit, it will heavily protect you from a lot of the junk that easily infects IE.

Plesae do not install Java just yet, but here is the official link, method to update:

Download and Update Java Runtime

The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12 about half way down the page and click on the Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says jre-6u12-windows-i586-p.exe and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be on your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Uncheck the Toolbar button (unless you want the toolbar)
  • Reboot your computer

You can remove this Browser redirector from Dell if you want. I would. But its up to you.

Google.com Search related, found on Dell computers. Responsible for redirecting 404s to a Google/Dell placeholder web page

O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\BAE\BAE.dll

Is this a Work computer? It has a lot of document and hardware security software that most home computers don't typically have on them.

Okay, the current logs do not show anything.

How is the computer running now?

Are there any other signs of infection?

It is not a work computer, but my wife and I use this computer often for remote access for work. So, that is probably why all of the extra security is appearing.

Things seem to be working great. Performance is much better, no more pop-ups, and "yoog search" is no longer appearing.

Thank you for all of the advice and help.

One more thing I wanted to bring to your attention again is the program I found in my add/remove tab called:

contextual platform worldadmarketplace

The only reason I am repeating myself from before is that I noticed in the ComboFix instruction from earlier, among the contents of the codebox was:

c:\windows\system32\cont_worldadmarketplace-remove.exe

I don't mean to fixate on something (1) that I have very little knowledge about, and (2) that may not matter, but I thought that I would just draw attention to it, in case you missed my prior post about it. If you had seen my earlier post and thought it was a nonissue, my apologies.

Thank you.

No problem with bringing it to my attention.

I apologize but I've now probably replied to about 1,000+ posts in less than a month so I sometimes don't go into great detail.

Yes please try the add/remove for it and let me know if it works or not. It may not since we blew out the main program file already. If it doesn't then we can run a tool to remove it from the Add/Remove.

Well based on your reply and the logs I think your now clean.

Please run the following to remove any tools that might have been used during the scaning and cleaning of your system.

STEP 1

Uninstall ComboFix.exe

  • Click
    START
    then
    RUN
  • Now type
    Combofix /u
(if you renamed Combofix.exe use that name instead)
in the runbox and click OK. Note the
    space
    between the
    X
    and the
    /U
, it needs to be there.

  • CF_Cleanup.png

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

Remove this folder C:\QooBox if the uninstall instructions don't work and delete Combofix.exe

STEP 2

Uninstall GMER

Click on
START - RUN
and type in or copy/paste
%windir%\gmer_uninstall.cmd
to remove GMER.

STEP 3

Uninstall other tools

Please
Download
OTMoveIt3
by Old Timer
and save it to your
Desktop
.
  • Double-click
    OTMoveIt3.exe
    to run it.
  • While connected to the Internet, Click on the green
    CleanUp!
button and it will populate a list of items to clean from your system that we used or may have used.

  • It should ask if you want to clean up, select Yes and allow the system to clean up these items.

    NOW
please reboot your computer to finish the cleanup process

Let me know about the Add/Remove thing.

Thanks so much for all of your help Advanced Setup. I greatly appreciate it.

I tried to Add/Remove "contextual platform admarketplace." I received an error message that said:

"An error occurred while trying to remove Contextual Platform Admarketplace. It may have already been uninstalled.

Would you like to remove Contextual Platform Admarketplace from the Add or Remove programs list?"

I didn't answer "yes" because I figured I would just the word from you, but I assume that I should just answer "yes" to that question and it will be gone. But, I will await instructions.

I followed all of your instructions - uninstalled Norton's completely, deleted the browser redirector from Dell, uninstalled combofix, tried to uninstall GMER (though I don't think I ever installed that), and downloaded and ran OTMoveIT3 and then rebooted.

I am awaiting further instructions to reinstall Java and to install Firefox. Also, I am awaiting instructions about Adobe Reader. And, to the extent you have any other advice for making my computer as airtight as possible, I would love to hear it (in addition to running my Trend Micro virus scan).

Thank you again. It has been a pleasure working with you on this. Hopefully, all is well again with my computer.

Yes you can now go and install the other software.

Here is the download link for Adobe Reader 9.0.0

Adobe Reader 9.0.0 ENU (United States) Without Acrobat.COM

If you have any other questions please let me know and stay safe out there.

Great, all looks good now.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • Check Turn off System Restore.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Install SpyWare Blaster

Download it from
here

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster
here

Install WinPatrol

Download it from
here

Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works
here

Install FireTrust SiteHound

You can find information and download it from
here

Install hpHosts

Download it from
here

hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,

tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites

by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Note 1:

If you are running Windows XP
SP2
, you should upgrade to
SP3
.

Note 2:

Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.

The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must.

Sorry for the hassle, but I have one more quick question.

I had been running Norton Antivirus when my computer downloaded SP3. I don't think it was 2008. Do I need to uninstall SP3 and then reinstall it, given that I was running Norton's, or am I fine because it wasn't 2008 and because it appears fine on my computer?

Thank you again.

No DO NOT uninstall SP3. You're fine. There was a fluke issue with some versions of Symantec that messed up the installation of SP3 but that has since been fixed. If you have SP3 you're all set now.

Make sure you visit Microsoft and get all critical updates though.
