XP Home stops responding at the same time each day

Hello everyone

This is my very first HJ log so please forgive me on my tech terminology. I have been trying to figure this problem out for a week and a half now. My bosses computer stops responding at the same time each day. If he leaves it on over night it stops responding around 8:30-9:00am. After a days work it will start acting up around 5:30-6:00pm. My only option is to do a hard reset and restart the computer. I'm not at work at the moment so I don't have the computer's complete stats but it is Dell XP Home on a Windows Server 2003.

When I get back to work I can tell you the specific error message. During these times, if you try to access the server, the icon will grey out and a window pops up and says you don't have enough resources to complete the action. All icons and programs will stop responding. If you try to go to the control panel it says that it can not create a shortcut here but it can place one on the desktop. If you try to bring up the task-manager a error window pops up and says it can not open. When you go to the start menu, the log off and programs section has dropped off the screen. If it hasn't dropped off the screen and you choose to log out and shut down, it will say you don't have permissions to do this. I then press the off/on button on the front of the computer and it will shut down. I then restart the computer and it seems fine.

I am current with all Microsoft updates and system updates. I have uninstalled all non-work related programs. I have Defrag'ed, error checked, used CCleaner and Glaryutilites to clean out old Regs. I have also turned off all startup items that were not needed. I ran Trend Micro several times with windows in safe mode and signed into the profile. On both scans it found PAK_Generic and/or Trojan_fake (if memory serves me correctly). I downloaded Malwarebytes and it found something called "minibug" which I believe was part of a weatherbug program. I successfully quarantined and deleted all issues found. Today after work I ran Memtest86 to check the RAM, but I only had enough time for two successful passes. I wanted to run it all night but my boss would freak out in the morning when he gets to work. He is one of these guys that doesn't read any error windows. All he cares about is getting to his email program. I have also reset the CMOD switch inside the computer.

Before I left work, I ran an HijackThis log and was hoping someone could take a look at it and give me some direction. I am starting to run out of options. Here is the Log. Thank you for any suggestions and help.

Thank you so much for your reply. Here is the information as requested. I noticed there are a few things on the logs that were uninstalled when I first setup the system. For example, McAfeeFirewall, Uniblue, and Symantec. Not sure how important those things are too you. First the combofix log then Hijackthis. Thank you again.

  • Root Admin

STEP 1

You need to remove and update your Adobe Acrobat

Update available for vulnerability in versions 8.1 and earlier of Adobe Reader and Acrobat

STEP 2

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

When we're done you can go back and install the latest version but for now please do not install any.

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply

Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.

C:\Program Files\Java

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

STEP 3

    Download and install CCleaner
  • CCleaner
  • Double-click on the downloaded file "ccsetup216.exe" and install the application.
  • Keep the default installation folder "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"
  • Uncheck "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar and use CCleaner from your browser"
  • Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS
  • Start the CCleaner program.
  • Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run
  • Click on Options - Advanced and Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Click back to Cleaner and under SYSTEM uncheck the Memory Dumps and Windows Log Files
  • Click on Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.
  • Click OK to any prompts

RESTART the computer

STEP 4

Download to the desktop: Dr.Web CureIt

  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
    check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Here are the results for each step.

Step 1. Removed left over files for Acrobat 7. I read through the security report and noticed that it does not affect Acrobat 6.x, which we have. For this step, the best I am able to do at the moment is update Acrobat 6 to its fullest. However, I am going to recommend that we purchase the latest version of Acrobat because of the security.

Step 2. Removed all versions of Java, including js2e. Ran JavaRa and it deleted old files. Found two folder locations and deleted the folders. Computer no longer has java on it. I only deleted files from "All Users" and the profile name as you directed but not from the folder "Administrator". Should I also delete those folders?

Here is the log file for JavaRa:

JavaRa 1.13 Removal Log.

Report follows after line.

Finished reporting.

Step 3. Ran the Cleaner for CCleaner. Did not run the Registry cleaner. However, I did analysis the Registry, there is a lot there, but I did not clean it.

Step 4. Ran drweb-cureit.exe. I ran the quick scan first and it found nothing, then I did a full scan. I think the program may have been updated since the directions you posted because it looked a bit different, but I found my way. I clicked "yes to all" and when it completed the scan it showed three entries but only one was called a virus. It had a red icon to the left of it that looked like the combofix icon. The move, cure, etc buttons along the button were dimmed out and I was not able to select the files and click the buttons. I saved the report, restarted the computer, and then ran HijackThis.

Here is the drweb-cureit log and then the HijackThis log.

The Dr Web has changed a little and I suppose I should run it again and note the new differences. Thanks.

The stuff it found was safe since it was in the System Restore area.

The logs currently look clean.

How is the computer running now?

Are there still any signs of infection?

The computer is actually running much better. I have not heard my boss complain and he hasn't called me on my drive to work asking what to do. I haven't seen the same issues since your guidance. I will confirm this with him for sure on Monday. Thank you so much for your help.

I will install the latest Java on Monday. Until I am able to confirm with him on Monday, do you suggest fixing the following items in the hijackthis log, or just let it be.

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

This is for the McAfee VirusScan

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

I would remove these myself - they're not a security issue so I did not mention them. It basically routes to Yahoo now days as they bought them up a long time ago.

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com (HKLM)

I would download the SRT tool to manually remove old Symantec software. Yes you can remove the others too if you like.

Great, all looks good now.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • Check Turn off System Restore.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore

  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.

  • Click the System Restore tab.

  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Install SpyWare Blaster

Download it from
here

Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster
here

Install WinPatrol

Download it from
here

Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works
here

Install FireTrust SiteHound

You can find information and download it from
here

Install hpHosts

Download it from
here

hpHosts is a community managed and maintained hosts file that allows an additional layer of protection against access to ad,

tracking and malicious websites. This prevents your computer from connecting to these untrusted sites

by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your own local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Note 1:

If you are running Windows XP
SP2
, you should upgrade to
SP3
.

Note 2:

Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.

The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

The windows firewall is not sufficient to protect your system. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic and this is a must.
