Malwarebytes Freezes

I have been infected by malware which my Symnantec didn't catch at all. So I ordered PC Doctor which caught many trojans and malware. But not all. I would still get Browser screens opening up spontaneously saying it had found 15 trojan, etc. and then proceed to replicate the page 10-15x. Technical Service at my College recommended Malwarebytes, which I downloaded. But I have troubles getting it to work. When I start a scan it will go for about an hour saying it had so far found 9 infected items, but then it freezes. The window outlines are there but teh internal part of the window (where the information is) is blank and cannot be restored. I even gave it another hour, but had to use cntrl alt del to shut it down. This has happened 4 times. What is happening? I tried to do the scan in safemode, but I cannot get my computer into safemode. I have a laptop with a wireless keyboard, and what ever combination I need to approximate a F8, I cannot find it. I also downloaded Hijackthis and did a scan withy a log, but I am clueless what to do about it. I woulod buy Malwarebytes, if I could be sure it woulod not freeze on me.
