Downloaded app - did it hijack me?

Recommended Posts

A few days ago, late at night, I was searching for music from the 1930s and found a site claiming I could download the song I wanted for 99 cents. But after encountering a few problems with the site I started wondering if it was all legit. Did some googling and though I didn't find anything saying "this is a fraud," I found things saying it is shady, and that they operate out of Russia. My bad for inviting the app onto my computer without asking for HIV test.

I don't know if my computer was compromised, but immediately put my security programs to work. Here are the steps I took.

Step 1:

Norton 360 scan. Nothing relevant was found.

Step 2:

HijackThis scan. At completion of the scan, a popup came up that said:

R1-HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings, ProxyOverride = *.local

Detailed information on item R1:

A Registry value that has been created and is not present in a default Windows install nor needed, possibly resulting in a changed IE Search Page, Start Page, Search Bar Page or Search Assistant.

(Action taken: Registry value is deleted.)

Step 3:

Tried to save the log so I could post it here. Access was denied as per this message:

For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need ot edit the file yourslef. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot.

Step 4:

I did the required search and only found one file with that description. It said:

# Copyright © 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.

#

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

#

# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should

# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.

# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one

# space.

#

# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual

# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

#

# For example:

#

# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server

# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.

# 127.0.0.1 localhost

# ::1 localhost

Step 5: I launched a Spybot scan, followed by immunization, and got this message:

Immunization incomplete.

The immunization is not complete, there are 77114 items still unprotected. There might be various reasons for that:

Other security software (like AVG Free of ZoneAlarm) on your computer might not look close enough at the immunization changes and mistake them for malware instead of malware protection, blocking them. The help has more information on these issues.

Step 6:

I tried a system search for the HijackThis log and found it as a hidden file. I'll paste it below.

Step 7: Does anyone see problems in the following file:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

Uninstall HijackThis.

Please update MBAM, run a Quick Scan, and post its log.

Next, download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post only DDS.txt directly into your reply.
