What we can do is rewrite a standard Vista MBR, and most likely the error will no longer show up. However, it looks like you have a compaq recovery partition, which may become inaccessible if we do that. Do you have any restore/recovery DVD for Vista?

No, what I mean is a factory reset DVD that you can use to restore your windows installation to how it was when you got the computer.

It is likely that the disk you downloaded is illegal btw, Microsoft doesn't offer recovery disk downloads for Vista.

Please boot with the recovery CD in the Vista Recovery Environment.

Choose the option for Command Prompt.

Type the following commands and press enter after each line:

bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

c:

cd boot

attrib bcd -s -h -r

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

bootrec /RebuildBcd

Bootrec will now scan for Windows installations and when found, will ask you to add it. Confirm when asked.

When done restart the computer and let me know if the error still comes up.

In that case I'd rather not do any more fixing, as it is possible that will complicate things (what can happen is that the ThinkVantage button will no longer work properly).

If you want to try nevertheless, run the following commands from the Recovery environments command prompt:

c:

bootrec /fixmbr

After the first step it would take me to the appropriate screen and then when I hit F11 it just went back to booting up and then to the eventual error screen. So, I guess maybe it isn't the ThinkVantage button per se, but F11 doesn't seem to work appropriately afterward. I will try a few more times. If it still doesn't work should I do the fixmbr?
