Vendor Information

After doing full scan, Malwarebytes found one object. I clicked the show results button and then decided to see where this malware came from. Right clicking on the object I selected Vendor information. The link took me to the Malwarebytes home page, not the information I was expecting. Where do I find the vendor information if the link doesn't take me there. I Googled it and found it, but not on this website, yet. I am still looking.....

Formerly we had MalwareNET, which would take you to a link on our website providing the vendor name and a brief description of the infection. Currently we are working on recreating this and making it much more detailed (formerly the information provided was extremely generic). I have no ETA at this time on when that will be complete.

Based on the image posted, I can tell you that the item detected was a PUP, which means Potentially Unwanted Program. The vendor name is BundledInstaller from the looks of it, which would indicate that it is a component of the installer that may be undesirable, for example a toolbar or some form of adware/spyware.

Oh that makes sense. I completely forgot about that. I just happened to notice this myself a day or two ago and was a bit confused on why it takes you to the home page.

I really think that any good malware scanner should provide an easy way for a person to get more information on a detection before deciding to remove it. If even a lmgtfy function, it at least would make things simpler.

don't agree rely on third party

better wait for MalwareNET or a online rating database (users rating of correct/ false positive of a detection)

Actually, if you think about it, an online rating database is *ALSO* a third party.  In fact, the only way it would not be a third party would be if

1. The information was provided by the AV/AS vendor, or 
2. The information was provided by the original (potentially malicious) software developer.

Any other information not coming from one of these two sources would be, any way you look at it, third party.

This is a really good idea. The Vendor Information link left in there is misleading and the fact that it takes you to Malwarebytes home page now is clearly an aftersight.

 

Here's what I've seen tons of other techie tools do: Add 'Search google for "threatname.exe"' to your right-click interface.

I agree, that's a good idea as well. Perhaps at some point we'll add both options (a link to more info on our site once MalwareNET is online again) and an option to do a web search (though I'd rather have it use the user's own default search engine in their own default browser rather than forcing Google, only because some users prefer different search providers).
