Malwarebytes (Trial Version), seems to have an annoying Glitch:

My system: XP SP-3 - I never check automatic updates for Windows. Haven't for years. Spyware Doctor worked fine with Microsoft Fire Wall in place, and Virus Protection & Updates 'turned off'.

With Malwarebytes, after each and every 'Quick Scan', upon re-booting, the Microsoft Security Options Balloon Prompt appears and the options are re-checked for Virus Protection, and re-checked for 'Automatic Updates', but still warning that 'Automatic Updates' has not been chosen. I have to go back in and uncheck those options in order to make the Balloon disappear.

Is this a GLITCH with the Pro-Version as well?

This isn't a glitch at all. If you perform a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it detects items called Disabled.SecurityCenter and you had Malwarebytes remove it, then that is why you're seeing the alerts again. Malwarebytes is resetting system settings for Security Center notifications back to default because many rogue infections are known to change these in order to disable those alerts.

Since you set these policies yourself, you should scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware after you've set them up the way you like them and then have Malwarebytes ignore those items and they will no longer be detected.

The link below is my response - it's a harmless screen shot - You guys continually REMOVE links placed by Forum users. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE THIS LINK FROM THE FORUM. They remove quite a few links because people inadvertently post links to malicious/infected sites.

This is a very responsive forum and I'd bet that the mods find it much easier to remove or disable links than to visit every site that's posted live.

PUM...stands for "Potentially Unwanted Modification". Your windows security center is disabled, some malware does that. That's why MBAM lists it as PUM.

you already stated you you've turned it off so on the next scan have MBAM ignore it......

Most members have never seen that site before. If you were to upload to the forum or post a link to photobucket/imageshack then most likely it won't be removed.

The reason is malware often disables windows update and other settings. Most computer users are probably not that savy in disabling windows settings and often they are using mbam for cleanup.

Mike,

Going by your subject line, Is it the case that Windows Updates keeps re-offering the same update? Are you having failures with Windows Updates?

Do you have Windows Updates totally shut off? I am trying to ask if you keep your Win XP current with Windows Update since that is very key in keeping your system up-to-date.

And in that same vein, do you have an up-to-date anti-virus application on this system?

"and then have Malwarebytes ignore those items and they will no longer be detected."

How is that accomplished? Somewhere in scan settings?

Simply perform a scan and then click on the Show Results button. Once that's done, click on an item which you wish to have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware ignore and then click on the Ignore button. Once complete, click on the next item you wish to have ignored to highlight it and then click on the Ignore button again.

Once you've done this for all items that you wish to have ignored, click on Remove Selected and then click on OK to the message box that pops up. Those items should no longer be detected in future scans.

Generally the only links which we remove are spam/advertisements and links which may be malicious, harmful or offensive. This being a support forum for a company which produces security software, it is our responsibility to ensure that our customers who come here seeking assistance and information may do so safely without concern of possibly becoming infected. That's why we may seem strict at times.

That being said, I see nothing wrong with the link you posted, however it is generally more convenient if you embed the image in your post by simply using the attachment function which can be done by clicking on the More Reply Options button and using the Browse button under Attach Files, that way no one needs to navigate away from the forum in order to see the image which you are referring to, but that's entirely up to you.

Thanx for everyone's help ;)

Let's continue to be patient with each other, and focus on some issues raised here:

"Generally the only links which we remove are spam/advertisements and links which may be malicious, harmful or offensive."

UNDERSTOOD - RESOLVED - Thank You!

"Are you having failures with Windows Updates?" NO - I Choose to Update Selectively At My Descretion - Thank You

"Do you have Windows Updates totally shut off?" Yes - I NEVER Choose Downloads Automatically - Thank You

"And in that same vein, do you have an up-to-date anti-virus application on this system?" NO - This is an important question, since I Uninstalled "PC Tools Spy Doctor" Versions 7 & 9. Version 9 became 'Top Heavy' for my system: 3.4ghz Pent 4 - 3 Gigs Ram - Dell Dimension 8400. I suppose I'll need Anti-Virus. Malwarebytes is NOT an Anti-Virus Software - Correct? Can someone recommend a program that will be compatible to Malwarebytes? How bout "SUPERAntiSpyware"?

Thank you

  • Root Admin

In testing from the Windows Secrets site they feel that Microsoft Security Essentials is one of the better ones for low resource use.

your free AV tool a ‘resource pig?’

SUPERAntiSpyware is basically the same thing as our product, neither one are an Anti-Virus product.

Microsoft Security Essentials

However if you're not keeping your Microsoft Critical Updates up to date then you're pretty much wasting your time with other security software as none of them are intended to prevent infection due to core OS code bugs - that is what the MS Critical Updates are for. You can ignore others but the critical ones you should not.

You should also keep your other browser plugins up to date as well and remove older ones.

If you run this it will show you some of the items on your system and their status.

Next, download Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
