Hello,

I have been using the paid verion of malwarwbytes for sometime. It came up 2 or 3 weeks ago with a threat of PC 2009 folders in my Program Files and in my (x86)Program Files. I allowed it to remove the threats and reboot. I have never installed that program on my computer. Several day ago it again reported the same threats and before taking action, I looked for the offending folders. They were not to be found. I let it remove the threats and reboot again. I run behind Comodo Firewall, run Norton AV resident and scan standalone with MSE and SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes.

I decided to run the Malwarebytes as resident and it did so but only in the owner account, not in my user account. I had to manually start it and enable the protection. I tried reinstalling it but found I can not connect to malwarebytes.org. I've tried for two days. I have also tried on an Ubuntu box. So I downloaded the free new version from CNET and installed it. It allowed me to trial upgrade to pro which I did and then I entered my registration. It does not autostart in the user account even though CCleaner shows the startup programs existing. I have run SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes and Norton and MSE on the computer and also in safe mode no network and it shows that I am clean. I have checked the Hkey Software registry for any PC 2009 entries and found none. HELP PLEASE!

Glenn

Hello and welcome to Malwarebytes

First off, you should not run more than one antivirus software at the same time as this can cause conflicts and your system to lock up, you mentioned you run Norton and MSE, That being said....

Since you think you are infected, here are the steps needed to get your computer cleaned....

Please read the following so that you can begin the cleaning process:

Don't use any temporary file cleaners unless requested - this can cause data loss and make recovery difficult

You have 3 Options that you can choose from as listed below:

  • Option 1 —— Free Expert advice in the Malware Removal Forum
  • Option 2 —— Paying customer -- Contact Support via email
  • Option 3 —— Premium, Fee-Based Support

OPTION 1

As we don't deal with malware removal in the General Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forum, you need to start a topic in the

Malware Removal forum so a qualified helper can help you fix any malware related problems/infections you may have.

  • Please read and follow the directions here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=9573), skipping any steps you are unable to complete.
  • After posting your new post, make sure under options, you select Track this topic and choose Immediate Email Notification,
so that you're alerted when someone has replied to your post.

NOTE: Please do not post back to (bump) your topic within the first 48 hours.

Replying to your own posts changes the post count and helpers are looking for topics with zero replies.

If you reply to your own post helpers may think that you're already being helped and thus overlook your post.

  • If there is no reply from any experts after 48 hours, you can reply to the topic, asking for help again.
    Or
  • You may send a Private Message to a Moderator asking for assistance.

OPTION 2

Alternatively, as a paying customer, you can contact the help desk at support@malwarebytes.org or here (http://helpdesk.malwarebytes.org/home)

OPTION 3

If you would like to use our Malwarebytes Premium Services, Comprehensive solutions to all your computer support needs—from installation and set-up to troubleshooting and tune-ups go to our Malwarebytes Premium Services support site here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/premium-support.php)

Please be patient, someone will assist you as soon as possible.

Hello Firefox,

I honestly do not know if I am infected. All my scans have shown that I am not infected. I am only expressing the situation I find myself in. One of the main issues is that i cannot connect to Malwarebytes.org. I can connect to the forum. I also cannot connect to Malwarebytes.org on a linux Ubuntu machine that doesn't have any malwarebyte program. Is this a sign of an infection?

Thanks for you assistance. As to the AV, I run Norton resident and MSE off. I run standalone MSE scans regularly. I also have run the msert.exe from MS and nothing shows that I am infected? Note that the link you posted for me "(http://www.malwareby...?showtopic=9573)" , does not connect.

What do I need to do?

Thank you for your help!

Glenn

It actually sounds like it could be an issue with the DNS settings in your router since multiple PC's are affected. I would recommend checking those settings, and if they have been altered or hijacked, I recommend resetting the router, setting it to WPA2 encryption for security, and setting a strong password to prevent malicious access to it in the future.

For the issue with the Antivirus 2009 folders being detected by Malwarebytes Anti-Malware when they do not exist, that is due to a known issue with COMODO. You can safely have Malwarebytes ignore those detections.

Hello,

Thanks for your response. It gets stranger. The two affected computers are hardwired through the router, they do not share anything. My wifes laptop is wireless to the router and it does connect to the site. I am using mac filter and WPA2 with over 120 bit password. Does this help any? I am totally lost. I've downloaded another pendrive run antimalware and running it on my W7 main computer. Appreciate any ideas!

I would say check your HOSTS files, but since one of the affected PC's is Linux, that would not apply. I would still recommend checking the DNS settings in the router. While it's very unlikely, it is possible that an infection on one of your systems was able to penetrate the router and alter the settings.

Hello,

I've discovered something that affects the connecting to malwarwebytes.org. I am running FF and using an add-on HTTPSEverywhere. When I disable this add-on, I can connect everytime. When I re-enable the add-on, I again can no longer connect. I use FF and HTTPS Everywhere on the Linux and the W7 Machines. Have you heard of this before or offer any insight into this strange situation. Thanks for you continuing help!

Glenn

The same here (Vista x86 SP2, MBAM 1.60.1.1000 and FF10.0.2 with HTTPS Everywhere 1.2.2)

Only by disabling the specific malwarebytes.org rule in HTTPS Everywhere, you can reach the MBAM main page.

A tad weird, the add-on doesn't give me any troubles with other sites (sofar)

  • 2 weeks later...

I use the FF addon as well. For the longest time I could not figure out why I couldn't get to the main website. Then I googled the problem and wound up here lol . Anyway's I disabled HTTPS Everywhere and all is well.

Could Malwarebytes PLEASE code the website to be able to accept HTTPS Everywhere?? It is one of the safest ways to be surfing on the internet. PRETTY PLEASE??? - with sugar on it?

Hi, Ardiva:

Until one of the MBAM staffers has a chance to reply specifically to your request, you might find the 3rd reply by patrickjdempsey in this topic from the MZ forum earlier today to be interesting reading: :)

HTTPS Everywhere Add-on blocks Google Maps
