Remove xls infection japanese characters

Every time I open an excel file (even ones created some time ago, an immediate new file appears with either japanexe characters as title and reputedly empty. When I close excel the new file remains, accumulating several unless I delete them. I've run a purchased copy of malwarbytes on both the internal and external hardrives which has discovered one infection each time (and eliminated it) but the problem continues to occur.
