Hi! This is my second time, not sure where my first post went.

This is what my pc is doing:

Windows will only boot up in safe mode.

Will not restore.

Firefox frequently crashes and redirects to something else after clicking on a link.

Here's what I did:

Downloaded Malwarebytes. Quick scan and full scan. It fixed 20 things and was fine until the pc started to lose all the icons and programs. I downloaded unhide.exe and then RogueKiller and it fixed some things but the pc still continues to have the same problems as earlier. I went back to the beginning, "Now that I'm infected what do I do?" and tried the scan again. I couldn't find my Malware icon so I downloaded it again. It said that it couldn't because it was corrupt. I tried 2 more times and it seemed to download but then I got this error message.

"PROGRAM_ERROR_UPDATING (32,0,MBAMFileIO::WriteFile)

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

I am at a loss. Thank you for any help you can give.

Christy

Hello,

Restart the system, as the pc is booting up Tap & retap F8 function key to get Advanced Boot options.

Select Safe Mode with Networking

Read and follow the directions >> here << , skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Skip the MBAM part. Let's get the DDS logs.

and stop trying to self-diagnose. Do NOT run any other tools on your own, unless asked by your helper.

Hello,

You will want to print out or copy these instructions to Notepad for Safe offline reference!

These steps are for czakatak54 only. If you are a casual viewer, do NOT try this on your system!

If you are not czakatak54 and have a similar problem, do NOT post here; start your own topic

The fixes in this Topic are for this system only! Do not apply the fix-instructions from this topic to your System or any other one!

Step 1

1. Go >> Here << and download ERUNT

(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)

2. Install ERUNT by following the prompts

(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)

3. Start ERUNT

(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)

4. Choose a location for the backup

(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).

5. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked

6. Press OK

7. Press YES to create the folder.

Step 2

Set Windows to show all files and all folders.

On your Desktop, double click My Computer, from the menu options, select tools, then Folder Options, and then select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.

Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.

Next un-check Hide protected operating system files. Exit Windows Explorer.

Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray.

At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".

Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.

Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.

Uncheck both of those boxes.

Temporarily disable AVG anti-virus How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

Step 3

Download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, by Bill Castner, MS-MVP, a self-extracting ZIP archive from

>>> here <<<

  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
  • A black box will briefly appear and then close.
  • This fix may prove temporary. Active malware may revert these changes at your next startup. You can safely run the utility again.

Step 4

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-Click on TDSSKiller.exe to start it.
  • Click on "Change parameters" and place a checkmark next to Verify Driver Digital Signature and Detect TDLFS file system, then click OK
  • Then press Start Scan

When the scan is done, it will display a summary screen.

  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Step 5

Download OTL by OldTimer to your desktop: http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe

  • Please double-click OTL.exe otlDesktopIcon.png to run it. (Note: If you are running on Windows 7 or Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy all the lines in between the **** stars lines **** below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    *****************************************************************
    :processes
    killallprocesses
    :files
    recycler /alldrives
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [Reboot]
    *****************************************************************
  • Return to OTL. Right click in the "Custom Scans/Fixes" window (under the aqua-blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Close any browser(s) windows that may be open.
  • Using your mouse, click on the red-lettered button Run Fix.
  • Once you see a message box "Fix complete! Click OK to open the fix log."
    Click the OK button
  • The log will open in Notepad (your default text editor).
  • Save the log. Post a copy of that log in your next reply.

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process.

If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Step 6

Download Security Check by screen317 and save it to your Desktop: here or here

  • Run Security Check
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the command window.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; close Notepad. We will need this log, too, so remember where you've saved it!

eusa_hand.gifIf one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Then copy/paste the following into your post (in order):

  • the contents of the TDSSKILLER log;
  • the contents of OTL MovedFiles log ; and
  • the contents of checkup.txt

Be sure to do a Preview prior to pressing Submit because all reports may not fit into 1 single reply. You may have to do more than 1 reply.

Do not use the attachment feature to place any of your reports. Always put them in-line inside the body of reply.

There will be lots more to do after this.

Hi Maurice,

Thank you for all your time and expertise. Unfortunately, my husband doesn't have the patience that I do and took our computer to his brother who works in an IT dept, so it's his headache now :)

I'm very grateful that there is a forum like this available to users. I've never experienced computer problems quite like this before and it's nice to know there is somewhere to go for help.

Thanks again!!!

Sincerely,

Christy
