mbam 1.6 will not run, 1.46 does?

Recommended Posts

Apologies in advance if this topic has already been addressed, but my search did not turn it up.

I run malwarebytes relatively infrequently on my HP Pavilion Vista 64 bit Home Premium notebook, but at the last attempt, I upgraded from 1.43 to 1.6, and although it installs, each time I try to run it, I get the error message that Windows must close the program, and cannot find a solution.

Steps I have taken:

1. Uninstalled, reinstalled, same problem

2. Went through the cameleon steps, each of the options resulted in mbam.exe being forced to close

3. I have Zone Alarm internet suite on my system, so I tried running mbam.exe in safe mode, same result

4. I tried renaming mbam.exe to assorted variations, for example mmbam.exe and mbam.bat, same result

5. I uninstalled 1.6, reinstalled 1.46, updated the malware definitions, and it ran a complete scan fine, no problems found

6. I of course ran a complete scan with Zone Alarm, and again, no problems found.

I am curious to know if there is an explanation for this...as I do value the Malwarebytes capability, and perceive it to be a great complement to any other anti-virus/malware software on the market.

Many thanks for any thoughts on this...and again, I do hope I am not asking a question already answered.

Peter

Hello and welcome to MBAM, petergoode:

Sorry to hear about your updating issues.

At any point during your reinstalls, did you run the mbam-clean.exe removal tool and perform the necessary system restarts (reboots)?

If not, please follow the steps described below carefully for an MBAM Clean Install:

  • If you are running MBAM PRO, please be sure you have your license ID and key available (sent via email at the time of online purchase, or in the box).
  • Download and run mbam-clean.exe from here.
  • It will ask to restart your computer; please allow it to do so - this is very important!
  • After the computer restarts, temporarily disable your Anti-Virus and install the latest version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here.
  • If you are using MBAM PRO, you will need to reactivate (register) the program using the license ID & key.
  • Launch the MBAM program and (if you are using MBAM PRO) set the Protection and Registration.
  • Then go to the UPDATE tab (if not done during installation) and check for updates.
  • Restart the computer again and verify that MBAM is in the task tray (if using the PRO version).
  • Now set up any file exclusions, as may be required in your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security/Firewall applications, and restart your Anti-Virus/Internet-Security applications. You may use the guides posted in the FAQs here, or ask and we'll explain how to do it.

Please let us know if this resolves your issues.

If it doesn't, then please refer to this sticky article about updating issues for additional troubleshooting information.
