Registry value Trojans that won't delete on reboot

Recommended Posts

Okay I'll have to review this deeper some time tomorrow. I'm heading out of town for the evening soon.

Looking better, but something appears to still be there.

Please download the following scanning tool. GMER

  • Open the zip file and copy the file
    gmer.exe
    to your Desktop.
  • Double click on
    gmer.exe
    and run it.

  • It may take a minute to load and become available.

  • Do not make any changes. Click on the
    SCAN
button and DO NOT use the computer while it's scanning.

  • Once the scan is done click on the
    SAVE
button and browse to your Desktop and save the file as
    GMER.LOG

  • Zip up the
    GMER.LOG
    file and save it as
    gmerlog.zip
and attach it to your reply post.

  • DO NOT
directly post this log into a reply. You
    MUST
attach it as a .ZIP file.

  • Click OK and quit the GMER program.

Here's the GMER log zipped up. My husband installed IE 7 early tonight, since he saw on another site that might over-write the trojans (and we needed to update anyway). The update seems to have fixed the re-directs/pop-ups we were getting, but the Malwarebytes scan still shows the same 4 trojans. So, a little progress, but no solution. Thanks so much for your time!

If you can please run this tool. Download it, double-click it to run while you have a blank CDR in to burn. It will automatically burn the CD for you.

On the bottom left there are a couple of flags, if you click on the British one the interface will switch to English.

If you can't run this let me know and we'll try something else.

Requires access to a working computer with a CD/DVD burner to create a bootable CD.

    Avira AntiVir Rescue System
Avira AntiVir Rescue System is a Linux-based application that allows accessing computers that cannot be booted anymore. Thus it is possible to:

  • repair a damaged system,
  • rescue data,

  • scan the system for virus infections.

Just double-click on the rescue system package to burn it to a CD/DVD. You can then use this CD/DVD to boot your computer.
The Avira AntiVir Rescue System is updated several times a day so that the most recent security updates are always available.

I was able to burn the CD; figured out how to boot from it, but after that I have trouble. The program runs, but it displays larger than my screen, so I can't access the flags at the bottom left to change from German to English. I've adjusted the screen properties in Windows, but it doesn't affect the screen size in the pre-Windows stages (duh :) ). Is there a way to change the display size so I can see the flags?

Are you sure it's booting from the CD and not launching in a DOS Window inside Windows? ie. It starts a DOS program and does not go into Windows, correct?

That setting should be physically on your Monitor. There should be a button to RESET to Defaults which should then allow you to see the entire screen.

It is booting from the CD and not going into Windows at all. I've worked with the display settings on the monitor, horizontal/vertical positioning, image settings, and resetting to defaults. The rescue screen is actually cut off on the bottom and right hand side, like there's nothing beyond the edges. I was able to scroll down in the right hand readme/information box; but I can't scroll or tab down in the remaining areas (trying to access the English language option).

I also downloaded the application again, but it was the same as the first download.

The monitor is a Dell E172FP flat screen monitor. I've looked online for how to change the resolution of the boot up screen, but haven't found anything yet that is helpful.

  • Root Admin

Okay, please see if you can run this tool then.

RootRepeal - Rootkit Detector

  • Please download the following tool:
    RootRepeal - Rootkit Detector
  • Direct download link is here:
    RootRepeal.rar

  • If you don't already have a program to open a .RAR compressed file you can download a trial version from here:
    WinRAR

  • Extract the program file to a new folder such as
    C:\RootRepeal

  • Run the program
    RootRepeal.exe
    and go to the
    REPORT
    tab and click on the
    Scan
    button

  • Select
    ALL
of the checkboxes and then click
    OK
and it will start scanning your system.

  • If you have multiple drives you only need to check the C: drive or the one Windows is installed on.

  • When done, click on
    Save Report

  • Save it to the same location where you ran it from, such as
    C:\RootRepeal

  • Save it as
    your_name_rootrepeal.txt
    - where your_name is your
    forum name

  • This makes it more easy to track who the log belongs to.

  • Then open that log and select all and copy/paste it back on your next reply please.

  • Quit the RootRepeal program.

Well your ZoneAlarm product is potentially blocking some things. Is this the firewall only or the one with the Anti-Virus suite?

Please download Avenger 2.0 from here

Open and copy the program file avenger.exe to your Desktop then double click to start it.

Copy and paste the following text from the code box below into the main window of Avenger.

Files to delete:
C:\Documents and Settings\Pete\Local Settings\Temp\bpgqgfuz.dat
  • Do not check any other boxes, uncheck Scan for Rootkits if it's checked
  • Close all other running applications
  • After pasting the text into the main window, click on Execute

Once Avenger is done try to run MBAM, go to the UDPATE tab and update the program again and do a Quick Scan.

Fix anything found and reboot the computer. Then run a new HJT log and post back all logs.

The ZoneAlarm we have is just the firewall.

I ran the Avenger software and it removed the .dat file -- it popped up the txt file log and I thought I had it saved before closing it, but I can't find it anywhere. Sorry about that, I must not have gotten it saved. I ran the MBAM, re-booted and then ran the HJT scan. Here are those logs. I did disconnect from the Internet and shut down all my programs (zonealarm, anti-virus, etc.) before running these scans.

Got it all done. Here's the new combofix log. Also, I had a message from someone else on the board that IceSword would take care of these registry values. I haven't run it, but was wondering if that's a tool you're familiar with? It sounds like you need to select the files to delete, but I'm worried I might delete something I need. I see that i didn't disable the ZoneAlarm when I ran this. Is that a problem?

The issue is that there is a process there that is putting them back not that they're not removable.

Please run the following and we'll see how it goes.

Download but do not yet run ComboFix

If you have a previous version of Combofix.exe, delete it and download a fresh copy.

Download it to your DESKTOP - it MUST run from the Desktop

download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Using your mouse, Highlight and then Right-click | Copy the entire contents of the Code box below, including blank lines

Open a new Notepad session (Do not use a Word Processor or WordPad). Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not enabled. Right-click | Paste the Code box contents from above into Notepad. Click File, Save as..., and set the location to your Desktop, and enter (including quotation marks) as the filename: "CFscript.txt" .

Using your mouse, drag the new file CFscript.txt and drop it on the Combo-Fix.exe icon as shown:

CFScript.gif

  • Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.
  • Disconnect from the Internet.
  • Disable your Antivirus software. If it has Script Blocking features, please disable these as well.
  • A window may open with a series of Disclaimers. Accept the Disclaimers to start the fix.
  • It may identify that Recovery Console is not installed. Please accept when asked if you wish it to be installed.
When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit.

A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once. Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

When that is done please run this again.

Got it done. The MBAM scan didn't find the 4 items in registry value; I rebooted the computer anyway before running the HJT scan. Here are the logs as requested.

STEP 1

Please check your version of Acrobat Reader if you have it installed

Update available for vulnerability in versions 8.1 and earlier of Adobe Reader and Acrobat

STEP 2

With all other applications closed (Taskbar empty), open HijackThis again

and run Do a system scan only and place a check mark on the following items.

  • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1;<local>
Then Quit All Browsers including the one you're reading this in now.
Then click on Fix checked and then quit HJT

STEP 3

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

When we're done you can go back and install the latest version but for now please do not install any.

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply

Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.

C:\Program Files\Java

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

STEP 4

Please let me know how the computer is running now and if there are still any signs of an infection.

Okay, our Adobe is 9; ran the HJT and removed/fixed that line; deleted Java and ran the JavaRa - the log is below if you want it - deleted the other Java files that you listed that I had. The re-directs in IE have stopped, so that's good, since that is what our initial problem was.

There is an issue I'm having with IE though, it seems odd, I don't know if it would be infection-related.

In my email program (Outlook) I click on a hyperlink (like for this forum) and IE opened a large window, shows connecting, but never goes anywhere. I closed IE and a "Locate Link Browser" box pops up. So I went through and found the link to IE. Now when I click the hyperlink it goes to the correct website in a small IE window, but also opens a large IE window that does the "shows connecting, but never goes anywhere" thing. Some other links in my emails cause Firefox to open, some pull up IE; which I'm not sure it was doing before (whatever opened always worked, so I didn't notice which program it was.) Is that an infection or just some other problem?

Thanks so much for your time with this problem, I appreciate your efforts.

My guess is that it's just a misconfiguration issue. Though that might be a bit difficult to track down.

Please download and run this program: Dial-a-fix

This will repair a LOT of common problems with Windows XP.

Once that is done please run a new MBAM update and Quick Scan and a new HJT log.

I tried the Dial-a-Fix, using the IE options that might be related. As I was doing that I noticed that the IE that was launching was version 6, when we had updated to 7. So I re-installed 7, ran updates. Still getting the 2 IE windows when using a link in email, but not when clicking the IE icon directly. So, that's just a different problem we'll look into; it doesn't seem to be infection related. Here are the logs.
