terrible coding, why is there user intervention needed for program updates?

Recommended Posts

Malwarebytes is a great product and its coding is very good. I know the team and there are NONE better.

You have to realize that you can't give everything away for free. The web site, forum, coding, servers and support personnel earn a living and give time, effort sweat and personnel achievement. That means Malwarebytes has to earn a profit. Thus what Malwarebytes does is it holds back some key advantages and capabilities for the paid-for version. The paid-for version is reasonably priced. It is a fair price but Malwarebytes still offers the capability to find and remove malware for free. There are some anti malware programs out there that are HEAVILY marketed through affilate web sites that give pseudo-instructions on how to manually remove malware. Then when those instructions fail they (and they are designed to be inaccurate) the site suggests a software and gives you a download link. So you download it and run it and it finds the malware but, it won't remove it until you buy the license. That isn't the case with Malwarebytes.

I'll get off my soapbox now. soapbox.gif:)

so malware bytes stops updating / working while it waits for user to manually install program updates

In the PRO version, it does when the protection module starts if you have scheduled updates set and have the Notify me when a program update is ready for installation. box checked (which it is by default) on the Settings tab under Updater Settings:

why can't the program just update itself? like it updates its definitions?

Do you mean install program updates silently instead of displaying this?:

If so, then it is because installing a program update requires a reboot, so the user must be ready to perform the installation, just as they would with any other security software update or Windows update. Other security products work in the same way. When a new program version is released, they prompt the user for installation, the user goes through the installation wizard and is prompted to restart the system for the update to take effect. This happens because security software, like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, use kernel mode drivers and services and other components that are in use by the system during the program upgrade process, so to replace these files with newer versions, the system must be restarted.

I hope that sufficiently addresses the issue for you. If there's any further help or explanation that we can offer, please let us know.

Thanks :)

i have installed the pro version for literally 100s of users

yes the PRO version

trust me, 95% of the users completely ignore that popup saying it has to be updated. they ignore all programs that pop up update warnings.

again, why in gods name can the program just not update itself instead of bugging the end user? what is the purpose of coding the program to bug end user instead of coding it to simply update itself?

just makes zero sense

ok so if you guys are saying that the program has to reboot, a much more viable choice ( just like windows update ), would be for the program to by default update itself at 3am and reboot the machine itself, or at least give us the choice to check off an option like this in the config.

Hi Jason - just curious; are you a reseller or distributor as well?

Most of the users that ignore warning bubbles are also the kind that turn their computers off at 11PM when they go to bed. A 3AM update schedule wouldn't do much with the computer off-line.

Flash,Java and Adobe (big infection vectors) need to be updated from bubbles and pop ups as well.

As does every security application (including antivirus) that I've ever used. In fact, most of the ones I've ever used (which are MANY), don't even notify the user of a program version update. Instead, the user has to check the vendor's website to see what the latest version is and download it and install it manually from their website.

<soapbox>

200% what David said.

End users who are too lazy pay the consequences ultimately, whilst the malware fighters continually provide them with safety and precaution tips for free. Not even mentioning free help to remove the crud.

Undless forums where prevention tips are published and updated (here and elsewhere).

As to the Pro version, I'd remind that you can tweak the Updater Settings (via main screen) and jump to Updater settings.

Just checkmark Download and install program update if available.

and for the great unwashed, un-tick the Notify when a program update is ready for installation.

My Pro version updates all on its own as long as it's on and internet-connected.

The sole intervention needed is on the occasion of a version change. And the main reason there is to allow the user to save his documents, etc before a Restart of Windows.

Not quite sure why my post was being quoted in last three replies  ; I'm not the user that was bitching about bubbles and such.. I was replying to jasonjm ; the user that started the Topic and has done "hundreds" of MBAMPro installs.

EDIT#2: CODE BOX link works if you copy and paste it - I gave up on the hot-link

  • 2 weeks later...

Most of the definitions work with older versions of the program, but there are sometimes newer definition components within the database that can only be used by a newer version. The older version will still work, but it won't be capable of using all of the definitions in the database when this happens because it doesn't know how to interpret some of the individual definitions if they are of a new type.
