suggestions for antivirus program

Recommended Posts

I just got a new system with Windows 7 on it. What security software should I install on it? I'll be behind a router most of the time and I use Outlook for e-mail.

First thing you want to do is turn off ( windows defender ) because it is worthless!!! Second thing you want to do is to turn off ( UAC ) because it is a complete joke!!! Third thing you want to do is turn off the ( windows built in firewall ) because it to is pretty much worthless!!

Now to answer your question directly about what antiv virus to run, there can only be one answer IMHO and that is go to www.avast.com and purchase ( avast Internet Security ) this will give you rock solid anti virus protection WITH a rock sold firewall!!

Here you can find Avast Internet Security >>> http://www.avast.com...ternet-security

Now you need rock sold malware / spywarem / adware protection and there can only be one answer and that is to go to www.malwarebytes.org and download Malwarebytes anti-Malware Pro

Here you can find Malwarebytes anti-Malware Pro >>>> http://www.malwareby...alwarebytes_pro

Follow these instructions and you will most definetly have peace of mind!!

Hi squidz,

Just to pitch in here. The matter of an anti-virus program is up to you but if you intend to pay for one, then check a few out e.g. Eset, Norton, Trend, Kaspersky.

I'd also mention that the Windows 7 FW is pretty good, especially if using it with a router. I have Vista OS and when I was using it's FW, never once had a problem, don't use it now because I'm running ESS.

Cheers, Brian67

Hello and welcome to the Malwarebytes' support forum. Thank you for choosing Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as your anti-malware security solution, my name is Oscar Rubio and I'll be assisting you today.

Here are some free anti-virus software choices for your consideration:

Microsoft Security Essentials:

Avast:

AVG:

no because Spywareblaster is designed to block the installation of ActiveX malware not normal malware like worms, trojans, eta

Isn't that the job of an antivirus? Most AV scans for spyware so it would seem better to have a spyware system that only focuses on prevention, no?

Hi,

Just to add to the conversation... if you're gonna get Avast Internet Security don't turn off Windows 7firewall. I asked on their forums if I should turn it off, and they told me that it's actually better to leave it on as it ofers IPv6 protection or something like that whereas Avast IS only ofers IP v4. I suppose they're desinged to work together? I use both and have had zero problems so far

If your looking for a paid Security program I recommend ESET Smart Security. I have used almost all the Anti-virus programs on the market today and ESET is by far the best when it comes to performance. From using Kaspersky for a few years then going to ESET, the improved speed of my computer from the switch was very impressive. Felt like a new computer.

Plus ESET has good detection rates and the Smart Security has everything you need, Anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, anti-spam.

But if you are looking for a free Anti-virus then I would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.

Good Luck, and I hope you find something that works for you. :)

Thought it's interesting to note that Avast recommends you leave the Windows firewall on.

What security software should I install on it?

You would benefit from a program like Sandboxie.

Sandboxie greatly reduces the emphasis placed on AV programs.

In other words, it is still advantageous to run an AV, but they are no longer the 1st line of defense we all thought they were.

A properly configured Sandboxie setup can change your perception of the security landscape.
