Virus successfully cleared, but Windows Security malfunctioning

Recommended Posts

*Note - I am not a computer guy. Please respond as though you are responding to a child. A very dumb child.

Last spring, I was surfing Google and got a virus. Malwarebytes successfully found and removed the virus. One problem - my Windows Security is messed up.

When I go to Windows Security Center it says that my automatic updates are turned off. To turn them on is easy. Just click the button. But when I do it says:

"We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to Systems in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click OK."

When I do, it's showing me that I'm already set up to receive automatic updates every day at 4am. But I don't think it's really happening because I never see the little update window pop up on the bottom right of my screen and I don't find that my computer has rebooted with the message that it was due to a Windows update (or anything similar) since that time.

So then I click on the link that takes me to the Windows website to manually get updates. When I do, I select "Express," but it immediately tells me that the website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page I am trying to view.

It's almost like this virus tricked Windows, and even though Malwarebytes removed the virus, the damage is still there.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hello and welcome to MalwareBytes forums.

Your probably seeing the after-effects of a malware infection. You are seeing anamolies that tend to indicate some of Windows' services are not running. The process to cure would be long and involved.

Do you have a recent image backup of your system that is from before the malware-infection got in?

If so, doing a careful restore from a mirror-image backup would be the fastest.

If not, and if you'll have the time and infinite patience, it is possible to look into the situation in Malware Removal forum. Just not in here.

If you want to pursue on Malwarebytes' forum, do this:
