win 7 home 2012 fake virus program

Recommended Posts

Hello and welcome to MBAM, trinc:

Please see this comprehensive article for information about computer protection.

The bottom line is that no single computer security product can protect against 100% of threats.

MBAM is an excellent product and -- especially the PRO version with its real-time protection -- it provides outstanding "layered", "complementary" protection alongside the major AV products.

HTH a bit,

Hi -

To add to the reply from

, can you please list the type and version of Antivirus program that you are using

Thank You -

AVG free version ( i was running avast paid version, for 1 year, but the scans seemed really slow ). this is on an older laptop that the kids use

so it's already slow. the fake antivirus had shut everything down ( malwarebytes / adaware / avg ) so i'm not sure if avg was even running

at the time of infection.

my question in a nut shell is: how did Malwarebyte clean my computer when asked ( run a scan )... but the real time protection not catch it at the point of infection ?

... how did the process start in the first place ?

Almost-certainly, it was a (fake) Flash installer. Never agree to install a 'newer' version of Flash when prompted to by a website.

If you go to http://get.adobe.com.../otherversions/ for the latest Flash (I recommend UNchecking the google toolbar installer option), it also installs an updater that will notify you at bootup (with no browser open) if/when there is a newer version of Flash available.
