Hello... So today i lost all sounds from my computer... It just says no active mixer devices when i try to play some sound. Maybe this started after i played around with my bios settings or after using the microsoft standalone system sweeper. My motherboard is Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. GA-7VT600 1394 (Socket A) Does anyone know how to get the sounds working. I tried to check which soundcard i have but no program seems to show it. Thanks you plenty.

Well i examined the computer with everest and found out this about the motherboard http://www.gigabyte....spx?pid=1667#sp It seems that it's embedded on the motherboard and is called Realtek ALC655 AC97 codec Chip... I appreciate all help. I need to play that gta 3 and without sounds it is hard...

That doesn't answer the question "Does the driver show properly in Device Manager ?"

Below are two images showing the Sound sub-system in Device Manager in XP (CMI8738) and Vista (SigmaTel).

Well it was not showing properly but praise the Lord! I managed to get it to work by going to bios and enabling the ac'97 thing. There are still some problems though for example the windows startup sounds does not work and adjust volume sound comes through pc speaker. Otherwise the sounds are now working. :D

Now if someone knows a program that i can use to scan the hard-disk for bad sectors other than the one that comes with windows it would be great. I think i go to sleep now. It's been a long day.

Get it form the manufacturer and download an ISO image, create a CD and run that CD based diagnostic...

SeaGate - SeaTools

IBM/Hitachi - Drive Fitness Test (DFT)

Western Digital - WD Diagnostics

Why not just use Microsoft's builting disk check utility?

For two reasons.

The first being you don't boot from the MS OS. You are outside the bloated MS GUI.

The second being nobody knows the disk hardware better than the disk manufacturer and thus their tools would be superior and may even have routines based upon inside proprietary knowledge.
