Really need help with respawning infection

Despite my son's conscientiousness, his laptop (running Windows 7) was infected this past weekend by at least two malware files that I just can’t kill. I'm at a loss as to what to do next, and he flies back to college this weekend!

One file shows up when I run a Malwarebytes scan -- a Backdoor.Agent in the registry at HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon|Shell. MB quarantines and deletes the file, but it respawns. The second is detected by Avira -- identified as TR/ATRAPS/Gen 2 Trojan. The file is named C:/Users/Adam/AppData/Local/4f84d729U/800000cb.@ Avira similarly quarantines and deletes, but it too respawns shortly thereafter.

In the course of researching, I came across info about the StartNow toolbar and how it’s often connected with malware. When I discovered it on my son's laptop(which neither he nor I recall ever being installed -- or even seeing), I tried to uninstall that. I see from the attached logs that some of that survives too.

I have pasted the DDS and HijackThis logs below and uploaded the DDS attachment.

Given my son's fast approaching departure, I'm very eager to find a solution. Any and all help greatly appreciated!

I think I finally cleaned my son's computer. I am posting my solution in case my experience will be helpful to other members. (Of course, if anyone sees that I continue have a risk of infection, please let me know!)

I decided that I would retrace my steps and repeat my cleaning efforts from scratch. I booted up in safe mode and ran an Avira scan, which found nothing (as before). I ran a Malwarebytes scan which, this time, did not find the backdoor agent in the registry but instead found an agent in a Java deployment folder. As prompted, I quarantined, deleted, and rebooted.

On reboot, I've run full Avira and Malwarebytes scans. Clean. I've also ran Spybot S&D and SUPERAntispyware again. Clean. I downloaded and ran Kaspersky TDSSKiller. Clean. (If anyone has suggestions for other apps to run, do tell me.)

I'm not sure what made the difference, but it's a gift horse in any event.

@leneal

This system has 2 antivirus appliactions installed. If both are now set to actively monitor the system, Then a deadlock is likely to occur caused by having the 2 a-vs.

The report showed this sys having both Trend Micro Titanium and Avira AntiVir !!

Also, about Spybot that is also installed: Be sure the Teatimer (live monitor) is NOT on. Otherwise, that could lead to conflicts down the road.

If your son's system is still around at your place, give me a heads up/reply to this Topic.

If I do not hear from you in next 2-3 days or so, I will close this topic.

Thanks for the catches, Maurice!

My son has already flown back to school, but I will ask him to make sure that Teatimer is turned off. (Pretty sure it is not.) I have to admit, with embarassment, that I did not notice he had two AVs running at the same time. I installed Ariva for him; did not pick up on Trend Micro being there too (and will have to ask him he got it). I'll have him disable Trend Micro, but let me know if you think that might be the wrong call.

Does it appear his system is clean at this point, or are there other steps I should have him take?

Avira is a very good anti-virus program.

His system has an outdated Java runtime which needs to be removed and the current one downloaded and setup.

Could not tell you whether it is clean without having him run some more tests.

For your son's system:

Your Java runtime is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • Download the latest version of Windows 7/XP/Vista/2000/2003/2008 Offline and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u30-windows-i586-s.exe to install the newest version.
    ( jre-6u30-windows-x64.exe if this is a 64-bit Windows o.s.)

  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup) javaicon.gif
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files

[*]Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window

Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.

[*]Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window

Small tweaks for Java runtime, since most all users do not need to load Java at each Windows startup:

Click Advanced Tab. Expand the Miscellaneous item.

UN-check the line Java quick starter

Press Apply then OK. Close the applet when done.

To test your Java Run-time, you may go to this page http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

When all is well, you should see Java Version: Java 6 Update 30 from Sun Microsystems Inc.

ALSO

Using Internet Explorer browser only, go to ESET Online Scanner website:

Windows 7 or Vista users should start IE by Start >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click and select Run As Administrator.

  • Accept the Terms of Use and press Start button;
  • Approve the install of the required ActiveX Control, then follow on-screen instructions;
  • Enable (check) the Remove found threats option, and run the scan.
  • After the scan completes, the Details tab in the Results window will display what was found and removed.
    • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.

Look at contents of this file using Notepad or Wordpad.

The Frequently Asked Questions for ESET Online Scanner can be viewed here

    http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/cac4.php?page=faq

    • From ESET Tech Support: If you have ESET NOD32 installed, you should disable it prior to running this scanner.
Otherwise the scan will take twice as long to do:
everytime the ESET online scanner opens a file on your computer to scan it, NOD32 on your machine will rescan the file as a result.
    • It is emphasized to temporarily disable any pc-resident {active} antivirus program prior to any on-line scan by any on-line scanner.
(And the prompt re-enabling when finished.)
    • If you use Firefox, you have to install IETab, an add-on. This is to enable ActiveX support.

ALSO

Download Security Check by screen317 and save it to your Desktop: here or here

  • Run Security Check
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the command window.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; close Notepad. We will need this log, too, so remember where you've saved it!

Then copy/paste the following into your post (in order):
  • the contents of ESET scan log;
    and
  • the contents of checkup.txt

The latter will only be a report on current status and is not any fix.

Thank you for your patience, Maurice. Here's what we have.

First, Java reinstall. He removed the old java (there was only one version) and installed the latest. As an fyi, when he selected java to remove it through the Add/Delete, he was asked whether he wanted this program updated automatically. Curiously, if he selected "no," the uninstall would stop, and the old java was not removed. Anxious that this behavior might be some remnant of the malware, I had him uninstall the old java through Revo Uninstaller. That did the trick. Through the java link, he confirmed that Java 6 Update 30 is the version installed. He also doublechecked to confirm only one copy of java appears in Add/Delete.

Second, Java tweaks. He followed your instructions about the tweaking. One glitch: the Trace and Log files is checked, but Applications and Applets is greyed out. When he mouses over it, he gets the message "Applications and Applets cached by Java web start and java-plugin cannot be deleted when cache is disabled".

Third, ESET Online Scanner. When he ran the scanner last night, ESET identified and cleaned three files: win64/sirefef, variants u, o and q. Unfortunately, my son lost the log file because he inadvertantly left checked the boxes that delete quaranteed files and uninstall the application on close. (Apparently, the log files disappears with uninstall.) Because the scan takes so long, he didn't have time to rerun it last night; should I still have him do so and post the log? Btw, I'm not sure where the delete files were, but his pc is running fine.

Fourth, Security Check. Here's the checkup.txt:

Fifth, I had him look at the Trend Micro. It's a free trial that he's never launched, so I don't think he actually has two AVs running at once. (At least, I hope not.) Should I have him delete or uninstall the application?

Thanks for all your help!

I suppose so. Have him get and run the following utility to cleanup after tools that I had you use.

I'll mark the topic for closure.

Close any open work-documents and user-started programs, as this utility will do a reboot-restart.

  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • Click Yes to beginning the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. Choose Yes.

On the after-cleaning of TrendMicro, see

TrendMicro Removal Tool

See this article at Trend Micro Support

http://esupport.tren...us/1056455.aspx

Cause you see the remnants of TM Titanium above. If you need more help on that removal, please check the TM support site.

On Internet Explorer, he ought to visit Windows Update and seek the Internet Explorer 9 version.

The Java tweak is not a biggie. You can disregard the "tweaks" I mentioned.

On Adobe Reader, use the in-built HELP menu and Check for Updates. !!! (amended notation)

Convey the following safety tips to your son. His system is a valuable asset and carries (I'm sure) important documents, so invest some time in prevention and learning about safety.

We are finished here. Best regards.
