Infected, computer won't start, unable to boot from safe mode or bios

Recommended Posts

Acer Aspire One, XP. Got an alert from AVG that it had blocked a threat-- FakeAlert trojan or something like that. I have AVG 2012 and it is updated. I tried to run an AVG scan, but it was shut down halfway through. Tried it again and the same thing happened. Went online and did an online scan (can't remember which one) and it came up empty. Started another online scan but it was interrupted too. About this time I got another notice that AVG had blocked a threat. All this time things were running extremely slowly or not at all and finally ground to a halt. I tried to restart the computer in safe mode so I could try running AVG from there, but no dice. Tried safe mode with networking, command prompt, etc, no luck. About this time the computer started in on this endless loop when I attempted startup. I could get it to the safe mode start-up screen, but no matter which choice I made (start windows normally, start in safe mode, etc), the same thing happened: the windows startup screen would appear as if starting up normally. Then it would disappear and the Acer logo would come up, then it would disappear and the safe mode startup choice screen would come back up, and the cycle would repeat over and over. Then I did research using another machine and found Kapersky and followed the directions to create a USB that I could use to boot from BIOS. After following the steps it said that I had successfully created the rescue USB. I put the USB into the infected machine and was able to get into the BIOS utility screen by using F2 at startup and I changed the order so that the usb would load first. Then I restarted the computer and it was supposed to boot from the USB. Instead it went into the same endless loop as before. So either I am doing something wrong in terms of the USB BIOS boot or???? What can I try now?

thanks much!

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

These are links to Anti-virus vendors that offer free LiveCD or Rescue CD files that are used to boot from for repair of unbootable and damaged systems, rescue data, scan the system for virus infections. Burn it as an image to a disk to get a bootable CD. All (except Avira) are in the ISO Image file format. Avira uses an EXE that has built-in CD burning capability.

If you are not sure how to burn an image, please read How to write a CD/DVD image or ISO. If you need a FREE utility to burn the ISO image, download and use ImgBurn.

Let me know how it goes.
