XP Antivirus 2012 + Automatic Updates

Recommended Posts

About three weeks ago, one of my computers was infected with XP Antivirus 2012. And I have another one to work on with 7 Antivirus 2012.

Anyway, the rogue was removed and fixed. However, Windows cannot turn Automatic Updates back on, and going to the Microsoft Update site presents an "Unexpected Error", then refuses to go any farther. Security Center constantly nags about it, and I'm not sure if there's another way of installing patches.

Thanks

Hello soulsilver: :welcome:

You may still have some residual registry corruption and/or the possibility of incomplete malware removal.

If you think your system is infected, here are the steps needed to get your computer cleaned:

Please read the following so that you can begin the cleaning process:

You have 3 Options that you can choose from as listed below:

  • Option 1 —— Free Expert advice in the Malware Removal Forum
  • Option 2 —— Paying customer -- Contact Support via email
  • Option 3 —— Premium, Fee-Based Support

OPTION 1

As we don't deal with malware removal in the
PC Help subforum
, you need to start your own topic in the
Malware Removal - HijackThis Logs subforum
so a qualified expert can help you fix any malware related problems/infections you may have.

  • Please read and
    CAREFULLY FOLLOW
    the
, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a
    .

  • After posting your new post, make sure under
    options
    , you select
    Track this topic
    and choose
    Immediate Email Notification
, so that you're alerted when someone has replied to your post.

  • One of the
there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.

  • Please refrain from making any further changes to your computer such as (Install/Uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc...) unless advised by a malware removal helper. Doing so can result in system changes which may hinder the attempts by a helper to clean your machine.

NOTE:
Please DO NOT post back to (bump) your topic within the first 48 hours.

Replying to your own posts changes the post count and helpers are looking for topics with zero replies. If you reply to your own post helpers may think that you're already being helped and thus overlook your post.
    • If there is no reply from any experts after 48 hours, you can reply to the topic, asking for help again.

      Or

    • You may send a Private Message to a Moderator asking for assistance.

OPTION 2

Alternatively, as a paying customer, you can contact the help desk at
or
.

OPTION 3

If you would like to use our Malwarebytes Premium Services, Comprehensive solutions to all your computer support needs—from installation and set-up to troubleshooting and tune-ups go to our
support site.

Please be patient, someone will assist you as soon as it is possible.

As stated, you have some residual problems within the registry. Is Automatic Updates the only problem you have remaining after having removed the XP Antivirus 2012 virus?

I was in the exact same situation, and even after successfully removing the virus using Malwarebytes, I still had no internet access.

I looked into the windows system log and initially found RPC problems. Turned out the registry was missing a key Afd altogether.

Fixing of this is described in Part 2 here http://annoyances-resolved.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-to-remove-xp-antivirus-2012-virus.html

Not exactly your problem but the general idea is the same. Look for the errors in the system log, and repair/restore any missing services, both as files and in the Registry.

@ mentormatt8:

Thanks very much for your well-intentioned reply.

However, please note that regular members are not permitted to provide malware removal advice here at the MBAM forums.

That's why 1PW directed soulsilver2010 to the malware removal section for help by an authorized expert.

If you would like to learn how to become an expert helper, there is some information in this post. :)

Thanks for your understanding & welcome to MBAM,
