Why are blocked sites displayed in binary?

The website blocking mechanism blocks IP addresses, not domain names (URL's), that's why you're seeing a string of numbers. Those numbers are the IP address of the site that was blocked. We do this for several reasons, but primarily because malicious websites will frequently change/randomize their domain names, meaning if we used www.badsite.com to block that website, they might start using www.badsite1.com, www.badsite2.com etc. to get around the block, even though all of those websites reside on the same IP address.

Binary is only composed of ones and zeros. All computers including modern ones use binary and all they can really understand. Think of it as a switch method. The computer only lets a certain amount of power(1) in then stops(0). It does this in a series. Other parts of the computer then interpret the series of ones and zeros. This is how your regular computer use is done. Every task the computer does eventually breaks down into binary and series of groups for example one task may be

010101 01010100 01010101000

another task may be

00000 111111 01010000 11111

Many of the IP's that we block are servers for botnets, which have no domain names/URL's, only IP addresses, and listing a complete list of URL's on a single IP address that are malicious would also be out of the question, as more often than not, there are many. We also block some entire IP ranges, which can contain many many domain names.

just displaying one domain name would help

i never know whether to unblock the domain number...or if it is a bad site how to reblock it..... i tend to remember 'words' rather than 'numbers' ..

having a name to understand would really help

Again, there is no way for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to know precisely what domain name you're trying to access. It could be 'www.safe-site-on-a-bad-IP.com' or it could be 'www.really-bad-website.com' if they share the same IP address. Some IP's are blocked (as I said previously) because they're hosts to botnets and other malicious content and they don't even use any domain names, so there would literally be nothing that could be displayed except an IP address.

To be clear, this is not a browser plugin that tracks the exact URL/domain name that you're trying to access. It is a web filter that can only currently block IP addresses and IP ranges. That being said, if you want info on a specific IP, you may do a search for it here, as many (though not all) of the IP's that we block will have info on that website. So for the example above, to find out about '61.139.126.254' you'd search that page and find this.
