I had a laptop with a trojan (a MS security fake) and was unable to open anything (and I mean anything) - a rather nasty little bugger if I do say so. I removed the HD and put in an external case and plugged it into my desktop rig. After setting ownership, I ran malwarebytes and it successfully removed the trojan. Pretty straight forward malware removal. Then when I plugged it back into the laptop, it booted up just fine, no apparent malware issues at all. However, when I attempted to open Chrome (then Firefox, then any other file) it asked me what program I wanted to use to open Chrome.exe (or whatever the normal executable file name is). I was unable to open any files or programs at all. I was able to get into control panel and mess with the settings, but there wasn't anything relevant. On a whim, I opened task manager and closed explorer.exe, and then attempted to reopen it. I was met with an error saying explorer.exe did not exist. Anyone run into anything like this before? I don't want to reinstall windows, but it is looking like I may need to.

If it is any help motivating ya'll, the laptop owner is an attractive female I am trying to date. haha.

Both systems are running Windows 7, 64 bit.

Greetings :)

Please try Chameleon:

  • Open Task Manager
  • Click on File and select New Task (Run...)
  • Browse to C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Chameleon
  • Double-click on the first item in the folder which is named mbam-chameleon to run it
  • Press a key to continue when prompted
  • You should see it running and it will eventually open MBAM and perform a Quick scan for you, once the scan is complete, remove any items that are detected and restart your PC

If that does not work, then try running exeHelper as described in this tutorial. If you are still having any malware related symptoms after that, then please do the following:

Please read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then create a NEW topic here.

Please note that it may take 48 hours or more for you to receive a response in the malware removal forum, as it is often busy at times. Please do not reply to your own post asking for help unless its been more than 48 hours since you originally posted, as this can make it appear as though you are being helped and take longer for you to get help.

If you prefer to be assisted via email you may contact support@malwarebytes.org and one of our support staff members will assist you directly.

Thank you :)
