With previous versions of MWB it was possible to copy rules.ref from a working machine to a virused machine in order to use the latest definitions to scrub it. It appears that that procedure no longer works in 1.6 as it complains that the file is either missing or corrupt. Is there a procedure for manually updating 1.6 on a machine that either can't or shouldn't have internet access?

It's already been updated (by me) the day that 1.60 was released. You now have to copy over database.conf in addition to rules.ref:

Note: Starting with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.60, you must also copy the file database.conf located within the Configuration folder which is in the same folder as rules.ref listed above.

You would need to download the rules file and copy it over and run it.

Please see option 4 from the FAQ here: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=10138

We will look at updating the FAQ soon about the rules.ref option no longer working.

My query is slightly different in that I'm not looking to update MWB on an infected machine, but rather, merely wish to download update definitions manually for the benefit of someone with a very slow connection in another country. I usually take updates with me when I go visit.

I checked option 4 as you mentioned and used the link to download the file manually, but it doesn't appear to have been updated since October 28. You can see that in the screenshot of the file I updated today using the link at data.mbamupdates.com/tools/mbam-rules.exe (which is the link I usually use) with the one I downloaded via the link underneath option 4, the latter being http://data-cdn.mbamupdates.com/tools/mbam-rules.exe. As you can clearly see, both files are exactly the same size.

In addition, if I try to run the executable on my own machine, it returns the same error the OP mentioned. I presume that's because it's a DAT file for the previous version.

Semi-cancel the above please. I dug up an old rules.ref file on a flash drive I had lying around and note that there have been several updates since October 28. Apologies for the error.

However, the existing download cannot be used to update the current version since it corrupts the installation after which MWB reports that no database exists as soon as it's launched.

But I can copy database.conf and rules.ref from my own machine to a flash drive for the time being.
