I just installed the new MBAM Pro 1.60 and have it running in real time. I understand that it is suppose to have automatic incremental updating.

The current database is 2011.12.24. Will it update automatically or do I need to do something.

Thank you

Hi, greyowl:

If I understand it correctly, once you have registered your PRO version, the updates will be incremental.

However, you'll probably want to run a manual update check once, after newly installing version 1.60, so that you have the most current database version.

Then you'll want to schedule your automatic updates for scans and database updates.

Open the main program window > settings > scheduler settings > add.

Then schedule both your database updates and your scans, if desired.

For example, I have a daily Quick scan scheduled at 5 PM, and hourly Updates with a Flash Scan on the half-hour of every hour.

(You'll also want to open the Updater Settings tab to configure your choices about PROGRAM updates.)

Basic scheduler help is available here (but I don't think it's been updated yet to reflect the changes in the new version):

Thank you for the information.

I notice that there is an update option for "realtime". How would this work?

I started a manual update but it wants to download the entire 6mb database, rather that only what is new as in "incremental updating".

How can I be sure that it is only doing "incremental updates" and not downloading the entire database?

I'm not sure about the "realtime" update option, as I've never used it.

So, we'll need to wait for one of the MBAM staff to weigh in.

Hourly should be fine, though.

Note: this doesn't mean that there will be a new database every hour.

There are typically 5-6 per day.

So, it may check for an update several times a day when there is nothing new available.

On the very first update check after a new install, it might need to d/l and install a bigger set.

After that, I think it will be incremental.

That said, I'm not entirely sure about how this works or how it is logged "under the hood".

We'll need to wait for the experts on this, as well.

That said, unless you have a slow dial-up connection or other limitation to your bandwidth, even if the database updates were NOT incremental, it wouldn't be a big deal.

They've never required more than a few seconds for a 6-7 MB download on my cable HSI connection or WLAN.

If you set your scheduler to run a flash scan and to display the popup balloon from the system tray when MBAM updates, you'll see it happening.

(The scanner window will also open during the flash scan, unless you have MBAM configured to scan silently from the system account.)

I like to have both these features enabled so that I "know" MBAM scheduled tasks are occurring as scheduled.

But it's a matter of preference.

You can always mouse over the MBAM system tray icon to see what version of the database is installed.

Thanks again..this is very helpful.

I have a dialup internet connections so 6mb takes a while to download and really slows surfing while that is happening. So, I really want the incremental updating to work. I previously stopped using MBAM because of the slow updating process.

Hopefully, one of the experts will answer the other questions.

I guess if you are on dial-up, then you'd probably only want to check for updates every hour or two, rather than more often or in real time.

As for the incremental updates, when I've done an occasional manual update check with the new version, it does seem to indicate in the open window/dialog box that it is downloading a smaller file than the full database.

However, I don't find anything concrete in the protection log to "prove" that the automatic updates have been incremental.

I hope one of the MBAM folks can shed some light on it.

Until then...

Best regards,
